I saw a thread about this virus and wanted to add a couple of links to the USPS and the CDC
I see the original thread is closed at the request of the OP. Does the OP “own” the thread? Why would he close it? It seems to me if there’s a reason like double threads or something then it would be justified but why for no reason?
Excellent question. Generally, if a simple question has been asked and answered to the OP’s satisfaction, I will comply with a request to close a thread. In that case, I really have no idea why the OP wanted it closed; perhaps s/he had selected “email notification” and didn’t want to receive a bunch of emails after an answer had already been provided. But on a simple question (here the answer was “no,” for example) I don’t have too much of a problem with closing a topic and making room on page one for more topics.
When a question and/or its answers are more complex, I view requests to close a topic with a more wary eye. I don’t really like to close threads before the TM have said their piece, even at the OP’s request. In those cases, I consider whether the thread has degenerated into flames and insults, I consider the possibility that the OP isn’t hearing answers s/he wants and is mad (in most of those cases, I’ll leave it open) and whatever other factors might be relevant.
So it’s really a case by case thing, with an eye toward allowing the total amount of ignorance fighting to occur. I’m sorry that you weren’t able to post your links reconfirming the answer the OP received. I probably should have left it open at least until a second source showed up.
Oh, and one other thing. The correct place for questions about the administration of this message board is the BBQ Pit. That’s not because we expect flames (or expect to deliver them), it’s just where it was decided to put them after several old administrative threads did turn into flame wars. I’m not going to move this one there now, but I will if this topic stays active. That won’t be a reflection on the question, but rather a simple reaction to the rules given me when I took this gig.
