Knight and Day

Did no one else see this tonight? Granted, I’m tempted to boycott Tom Cruise for his wackiness, but really what else was playing? I thought it was a lot of fun. Hell, even slightly inspiring - I felt a few hours of afterglow of taking charge of my own life and being adventurous… Of course, totally preposterous, but intentionally. Overall an enjoyable popcorn thrill ride!

Horrible, horrible movie. Sorry.

Why was it horrible?

I saw a trailer on fox network and thought it looked passing amusing. But then again I have seen movies where literally the best shots made the trailer and there were no more good scenes in the movie. I was figuring on waiting and catching it on cable.

I saw it, thought it was kinda fun. Cruise has jumped the sharp as an action star, IMHO, but this is really more comedy than action, a bit like Mr and Mrs Smith. Cameron Diaz made it worth watching, I thought; she can still do that goofy thing and make it look like she’s having fun. It’s not to be taken seriously, of course, but we knew that going in. As always, YMMV.

Yeah, I might see it. As you say, what else is playing?

I saw it last night and was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it was a bit overblown in places and you need to suspend you brain in the usual action hero spots, but I’ll be damned if Tom Cruise doesn’t entertain. I can’t stand his personal life, but on screen he works well.

The movie plot doesn’t hold up to too much scrutiny, but it doesn’t need to. The laughs are pretty good, the action is OK, not spectacular but not bad. There doesn’t seem to be much chemistry between TC and Diaz, but I can live with that.

Depending on your location, I’d venture to guess Winter’s Bone, Cyrus, Restrepo, Exit Through the Gift Shop, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Please Give or Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.

Or stay home and watch a DVD. (Oddly enough, I watched Mr. Cruise in War of the Worlds on tv last night, and I enjoy the movie so much I can just about overlook the fact that he is in it.) Actually paying money to see a movie he is in? No. He creeps me out too much. I will not put money in his pocket to keep his sad, sick crazy train on the track.

OK, I know Tom Cruise is a closeted, whack-job Sciencultogist, but he can be good in films.

We saw Knight and Day and really liked it for what it was - I would strongly recommend seeing it if you like a good, mindless, summer popcorn film.

Sure - plot holes you can drive a caravan of trucks through - but it was really funny in spots, the action scenes were over-the-top but still fun to watch - and the scenery was beautiful (filmed in Boston, Austria and Jamaica).

The best summer action film so far!

No, coming soon 2.5hrs away, no, no, no, no and no.

I have suddenly become a bit depressed.

Back in the day, Sarah Vowell said everything that ever needs to be said about Tom Cruise as far as I’m concerned. Even before the couch-jumping era he’s always had kind of a subterranean creepiness to him.

Of Dustin Hoffman’s autistic character in Rain Man she says:

But now that he is openly creepy it makes his over-the-top performances like here and in Magnolia that much more interesting.

Not to compare the two movies in any way… This is a poorly-written summer popcorn flick made in the hopes of filling enough seats to make a profit before the opening of Twilight: Really?

But Cruise and Diaz are incredibly fun to watch. Diaz’s scene where she’s supposed to be on some kind of truth serum is incredibly entertaining. And Cruise, as usual, manages to be interesting to watch in all scenes in which he’s not asked to behave like a normal human being. It’s a low bar, but compare these two to Heigl and Kutcher in basically the same movie a few weeks ago.

This is not going to be up for any awards, and it doesn’t deserve great reviews, but I don’t consider it a waste of two hours – I was pretty entertained the whole time…

I saw it last night. I enjoyed it. As I stated in the other thread about Tom Cruise and this movie… I think this is the smarted thing Cruise can do to repair his image as a weirdo. He has to be able to show that he can laugh at himself. Movies like this and Tropic Thunder are just what the doctor ordered. It was enjoyable watching what I would call ‘the old Tom Cruise’ where he doesn’t take himself too seriously. Furthermore, I don’t recall Cameron Diaz shaking her booty in this flick, which I would have guessed was in all of her movie contracts. She did, however, wear a bikini for a while.

Count my vote as “liked it.”

I enjoyed it. I interpreted it as June’s character has an elaborate fantasy about a secret agent, but none of it really happened.

It wasn’t horrible but the timing of it all never really seemed to click. It also tried to be way out there in the action cartoonishness but also didn’t stick with it enough.

Of the recent action-romance-comedies it is on the better side, but it is a very low bar lately.
