Knitters: What can I make from 1.5 ounces of wool?

My friend is cleaning out her dad’s house. Dad is in his 90s and went to assisted living. Friend said “I found a basket of yarn and stuff that was my mom’s. Do you want it?” Of course I said yes. I’m just sorting through it and found 2 skeins of 100% worsted wool, knitting weight. Each skein is 3/4 oz. The price on the label?? 15 cents! This must be from the 1960s.

So what do I do with 2 skeins of wool, each weighing less than an ounce? One skein is called melon but is red, the other is green. Obviously Christmas colors. What can I knit that is easy??? And small.

A standard skein of worsted is 100g=3.5oz=220yds
Looks like you have about 100 yds total.

That’s plenty for a hat or a toy. Are you on Ravelry?

ETA: Owl Puff toys only take 25 yds

Two sweaters that each weigh 3/4 ounce.

Before you start knitting, I’d wind those skeins into balls, either with a ballwinder or by hand. Because they’re so old and perhaps not stored in ideal conditions, there could be moth or other bug damage and you wouldn’t want to run into significant damage halfway through a project.

A homosexual.

Like the one your mother made you?

A teeny-weeny Christmas stocking?

Hats for premature babies - then donate them and feel the warm fuzzies.

Coats for small dogs

Have you considered a willy warmer?

Might make a nice gift for your friend’s dad.

You can knit balls for the christmas tree.

Or, as Pantani said, look around for charity groups that collect knitted hats, scarves, mittens, socks for families with children and little income.

I was wrong. Each skein is a third of an ounce! I’d love to make the owl puffs but I don’t have dp needles and I’d have to buy them and the project would end up costing me money. I wound the yarn into balls and it is in perfect condition, except for the slightly musty odor. Don’t know if I can deal with that.

I like the idea of Christmas ornaments.

100% wool? Make a potholder! And DPNs are an investment, but you can get cheap ones at WalMart.

Oh, crap. I looked at the link. Now I HAVE to make Owl Puffs.
