Turning a scarf into socks! Hurrah!

I’m so excited! I just got one of these:

I got the Color 1 scarf. So, I have to snip a cotton thread now and unravel enough to cast on. I can’t even wait until tomorrow to start them. I’m so psyched.

Has anyone else done this? They’re mystery socks, since I have NO idea what they’ll look like as I knit them. The only hitch I can see is that the instructions say they’ll have “crimps” in them since the yarn has already been knit up once. You have to block them to get the bends ou. But I bet just washing them (the yarn is machine washable) would take care of that too.

Woo hoo! Mystery socks!

Laura

I’ve heard of them, there was another brand I heard of (I think) and I wanted to buy one to try, but the store that sold them had a fire. Let us know the results!

That is really cool. I’m making my first ever pair of socks right now. I’m so proud.

Cool! These look like so much fun.

Knitpicks has “sock blanks” that you can dye yourself but are the same thing. In fact, I think that those are double stranded so both socks get the same dye job.

As far as kinks go, you’re going to block your socks anyway, or at least get them wet.

I have seven pairs of socks drying in the laundry room, two on the needles and yarn for six or seven more pairs in the stash so I won’t be buying these soon - but someday, for sure.

You should be proud! You are a knitting goddess and should never forget it. Happy socks!

Oh my, you’ve made me feel like the crazy cat lady, but with yarn. I’ve probably got maybe 30 pairs of handknit socks! But I HAD knitted myself out of sock yarn, so I had to make a trip to get some. Whew…that was close. I almost died without anysock yarn.

I’m just going to knit these up in a simple rib pattern.

Please tell me that you will wear the scarf as you unknit it, as per the website. Just because it’s been a lifelong dream of mine to wear a garment and (un)knit it simultaneously. If the blank is the same yarn as Happy Feet, I’m supremely jealous. It’s springy, isn’t it?

Yay!

Socks are neat. I’ve only finished a few pairs myself. I want to cast on another pair. I have enough sock yarn!

I think it is the same yarn. It’s a joy to knit with. I only got a couple of inches done last night. I can’t put it down…I didn’t want to go to bed, I wanted to stay up and knit!

Very cool!

I have seen this before and look forward to seeing your results!

(I am working on a Leftovers sweater in oxford gray, light-ish blue and brownies wool ease yarn.

How can this be? I didn’t think it was possible to have “enough sock yarn.”

Enough yarn is close to an oxymoron unless it is modified as in “I should have enough yarn for a leftover vest.”

I have “enough sock yarn” that I’m not allowing myself to buy more sock yarn until I knit up more of what I’ve got. Although, there is a part of me which is arguing in favor of relaxing that restriction so long as the sock yarn is inexpensive and really good looking. And since Santa made a mistake and brought me a gift card from Michael’s rather than one from Hobby Lobby, I have thus far not spent my gift card–I think if it had been a Hobby Lobby card it would have been spent already.

($10 of non-sock yarn which has been turned into a Presto Chango baby sweater, $X of circular needles to knit the above yarn, and whatever was left would have been sock yarn. )

Yes, when I get paid I buy yarn. Then if there’s anything left over I get food and stuff. Heh. Someone said that about books once, but it works for yarn as well.

Those are so cool.

Do you have any idea how happy I was when I gave my fiance some hand knit socks for Christmas, and not only did he love them, but said (hesitantly), “… do you think you could knit some more socks for me? I’d buy the yarn for you!”

!!!

He was hesitant because he knows I’m knitting a bunch of stuff and didn’t want me to feel obligated. Aww! I got some self-striping yarn in what I’m calling an Optimus Prime colorway (white, dark navy, bright blue, bright red and dark burgundy). I have about 2" of one leg done, but I also am doing several other projects (AND JUST GOT MY FIRST SWEATER EVER ON THE BLOCKING BOARDS).

Clearly, not buying more and more sock yarn ( or any yarn for that matter.) is a sign of mental illness.

The Knitting Police will be over to relieve you of your stash. Don’t even think about poking them with something long and pointy.

Having just spent the morning re-organizing my craft area which has become a depository for stuff - which is all mine, but it is not all my fault…ok…it is… - I realize that I have assloads of yarn that I am pretty sure I will never get too knit up in my life time. ( Two XXL Ziploc Bag Things and a few misc shopper bags…loaded with sweet, sweet yarn.) And it does not make me sad or hopeless…it makes me want to buy more yarn. Is that insane, or what?

If you think you have “too much yarn” it’s probably just that your closets are too small. I suggest:

  1. Buying a new house, or
  2. Taking over whatever closet space your husband is currently using. He won’t mind.

I almost forgot…this is awesome!

I said I’d teach this friend at work how to knit. So I showed her how last week and she took right to it. Then she said she wanted to do socks. Never one to discourage beginners, I told her sure…I’ll just knit along with her and demonstrate as I go.

So, she ordered me sock yarn as payment for the lessons! I think the point of having your friends show you this stuff is that it’s FREE that way. But she felt obligated, so my new stuff is on the way. I’m so excited!

How about something short and pointy?

No new sock yarn (today) but 5 Supersize rolls of Sugar and Cream came home with me from the store today–and the store in question wasn’t Michael’s. On the other hand, I’m not bored with socks in the abstract, but I’m bored with the sock presently on my needles (it’s a second sock, with horribly long legs, and I’m about halfway done with the foot (top-down)), and so ready to be done with it. The Sugar and Cream has more instant gratification to it.

So, you have become a dealer.
Congrats!
