At my house there is yarn / fiber in:
my closet (of course)
An Ikea storage unit in a spare bedroom (that used to hold sippy cups in the kitchen)
A decorative wicker box type thing under the end table
A basket in the corner of the living room (that used to hold the dog’s toys)
Mesh bags on a shelf in the basement (unspun fleeces)
Two of three drawers of the secretary in the dining room
I picked up a small china cabinet to refinish off Craigslist when I lived in a smaller house. Now that I don’t need it (because I bought another, bigger china cabinet off Craigslist to refinish) I’ve got my eye on it as a means to consolidate my growing stash. I’m tired of running up and down the stairs looking for stuff.
But don’t forget to be creative! Consider all those empty coat sleeves hanging in the coat closet! The mixing bowls in the kitchen! Do you really need all that Tupperware? Is your Tupperware empty? The toybox that’s mostly empty ‘cause the kids’ toys are always all over the floor anyway! The car’s glove box! Remember - if there’s vacant space, yarn can probably fit in it.
I don’t suggest my coworker’s favorite hiding place. He figured if he needed to hide something from his wife, he’d put it in the oven. “Because she *never *looks in there.”
Also remember: sock yarn does not count as stash.
I’ve decided that it is impossible to have a bad day when wearing hand-knit socks.
Socks are awesome. The first time you turn a heel you realize that you are a kntting goddess! I was going to chime in about the KnitPicks sock yarn scarves. It would be way cool to dye it myself.
I have on the needles; a couple of scarves, a really cool sweater vest for my hubby, which I keep starting over and over and over… and a plain pair of black ‘slippers’ for my niece. I’ve having a hard time with them because they are boring black, not because they are difficult. Yawn.
Right now I am hand quilting a wall hanging for my husband’s office. The fun part is that he doesn’t know it’s for him, so I can work on it with him sitting next to me.
That sock, for me, is always a side project that goes in the (hand knit by me) purse. Yes, I work on it at home, but I’ve got to have at least one other project to break it up. Right now: cabled legwarmers of my own design for a dancing friend, a series of felted, fold up brim cloches for me and for the kids of friends;it’s a pattern from “Felt It!”. Also, I have a sock in semi-hibernation, which is something I NEVER do for fear of SSS, but this yarn is hideous. I didn’t quite realize it had 0% wool till I got it home. It’s so gross.
Oh, and I am casting on for yet another “Fuzzy feet” tonight. My husband keeps wearing through them so this time I’m adding Fiber Trends’ two piece suede soles.
Update #1: My sock is done–and has been given along with its mate to my mother (as an only slightly belated Christmas present). She thinks she might wear them this week.
Update #2: Mom gave me a medium-size plastic tote so that I would quit cluttering my room with yarn. Because I have so far refused to put my WIPs in said tote, the clutter is not entirely gone but is diminished significantly. I had 5 WIPs earlier today, which was kind of discouraging since all but one had been cast on this week–the exception was the sock, which I finished today, thus removing it from the needles. But now the leftovers are calling to me, begging to be turned into a mini sweater ornament. Perhaps I should put the leftovers out of sight . . .
You are an absolute hoot! I know my husband has a couple of coats he doesn’t wear. I can stuff the sleeves and pockets. You are SO creative! I never thought of using my tupperware for this either. I’m sure there’s space under the sofa cushions…
Mmmmm. Malabrigo sock. I received two skeins of it in a “have pity on the undergrads” Ravelry swap, and I’m a bit paralyzed by its beauty and softness. I mean, am I actually supposed to use it for footwear? What if I don’t pick just the right pattern? Etc, etc.
I’ve been dodging the question by working on the miles of tedious straight lines on this.
You think you get paralyzed by that… what about Handmaiden’s Casbah which I also bought (actually, I’m thinking of making a cowl from it… it’s too pretty to be socks.)
I just started on thismyself and have been loving it so far. I’m making it out of this yarn in Roasted Berry.
That scarf is really beautiful! I’m doing the multi-directional scarf from Ravelry for a gift exchange in a couple of weeks. Easy and fun…I hadn’t done much with short rows before.
I took a photo of my one completed sock, but I am having trouble transfering it my computer. That’s the last time I buy the “display model” of anything. Stupid camera!
No, NO! All you people with the wrong attitude. You need one “sofa project.” One to take to work to do at lunch. One for the bedroom, one if your husband makes you watch American Idol.
I want to start that Knitty scarf with the lacy ends now too.
I understand these words, but not in this configuration. OUT of sock yarn? Unpossible.
I just got some “Sailor’s Warning” by Dragonfly Fibers (Etsy and Ravelry). I have a crush on it. I saw one of the ladies at my weekly sit n’ knit working with it and fell deeply in covet. I don’t know what I’m going to make with it, but I don’t want to put it on my feet and hide it. I don’t wear socks enough for that.
I really should make something with my handspun. Don’t know what though. None of it is superwash and I’m afraid to break it. Perhaps I should start spinning again too, eh? My poor wheel’s been sitting in a corner since the pre-Christmas knitting frenzy. I wonder if I should keep it up or sell the wheel.
I have one sofa project, one bedroom project (I watch dvd’s on my computer), one travel project (when I anticipate waiting somewhere), and a few others that alternate where they are.
Oh and Junio Regia is a nice project. My friend made one, and it’s on my Ravelry queue.
