Yeah! and another thing, rap music has obscene and sexist lyrics- have any of you heard this stuff?
I recently saw “!!!111111quadratic equation”, which I must admit raised a smile.
What’s the joke?
I’m honestly suprised that nobody has replied with “OMFG, stfu w/ t3h l33tsp33k u n00bs!11!1eleventyone!12”
pwned!
wtfpwned!
Truly, these are the Last Days, there are Signs…
I’ve wondered about that, too. And does the Z stand for anything, or are you supposed to pronounce the thing like “Zoh my God!”? (Which is how I do it in my head.)
My “favorite,” though, is OMGWTFBBQ?! I can’t help but admire its…zest.
I always took “ZOMG” to be a satirical version of “OMG”, as in the person was so quick to jump to the knee-jerk reaction that they didn’t even finish opening their mouth before exclaiming, causing the first sylable to be slurred.
“OMFG” I just figures was a more angry version of “OMG”, and “OMGWTFBBQ!” is just an expression of over the top dismay (usually either poking fun at someone else, but sometimes poking fun at one’s own irritation at something).
Its because the z is right next to caps lock. So it was a common type incorporated into language. Like teh.
Since an example of this has been hanging near the top of the Pit for a week or so, I’d just like to say that I’m sick of “Oh Noes!” as well.
As if that wasn’t bad enough in netspeak, I have a friend who uses that in face-to-face conversation. Makes me want to punch him whenever he says it.
You only see ZOMG because you’re a WoW geek. Nerd.
The OED cites that ZOMG was first used by Marlowe, when he said “Zounds! Oh my fucking God!”
Heh, my friends and I (including a redneck guy who chops down trees for fun and works for an oil company) use “Oh noes!” in a satirical fashion, usually followed with some weird but relevant-to-the-immediate-conversation thing like “Irish Cream’d!”
Actually, the redneck guy has come to embrace the satirical use of “Oh noes!” to a higher degree than those of us who are actually geeks in our circle of friends.
“Oh Noes” is ancient and predates the internet by at least 10 years. My stepsister and her family used it all of the time in the 70s. Here on the dope it seems to be mostly satirical. Back then, they all did it to be cute and innocent seeming…blech.
