Knoppix

This is a spinoff of this thread, but since I’m asking a different question, I thought it would be best to open a different thread. If this isn’t the proper protocol, please let me know.

MannyL, thanks to you, I’m on the right track. I got my Knoppix CD and loaded it, and I can see the data on the bad drive. However, I can’t move it. I found out, that since both drives are using NTFS partition tables, I need a utility called Captive NTFS in order to be able to move the data. My version of Knoppix doesn’t have Captive NTFS.

Now, my first question is, where can I download Captive NTFS while I’m in Knoppix so I can load it and use it? I’ve looked, and I can’t find where I can do that.

Also, I downloaded a newer Knoppix image than the one that I have. However, I can’t burn it to create a bootable disc. Using Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6, I can get the disc burned (using hard drive emulation. Floppy drive emulation didn’t work at all. My computer went straight to Windows), and my computer tries to boot to it, but I get an error message that says there’s no OS found. This leads me to believe that the image is bad. Is that the most probable reason? I can’t download a different image right now to test another one, but I plan on doing it tonight.

When the Roxio burned discs didn’t work, I installed the version of Nero that came with my burner, and unfortunately, I don’t remember what version it is (I uninstalled it). I couldn’t even attempt to burn a bootable Knoppix CD with this, because when I specified that I wanted the CD to be bootable, it added 50MB of boot information to be burned. Considering that the Knoppix image I downloaded is 680+MB, you can see why this is a problem with 700MB CDs.

So, am I doing the right thing to create a bootable Knoppix disc? Is there a way to force Nero to burn only the same type of boot information that Roxio did?

Thanks again.

OK, a few things. Primarily, you don’t need to specify in Nero that the CD be bootable. Simply open the image with Nero and burn. The .iso is already bootable (assuming that your computer’s BIOS is set to allow booting from CD, but judging from the OP that is the case).
However, if memory serves me correctly even with the proper utility you won’t be able to transfer files using Knoppix because it doesn’t allow reading and writing to the system disk. For security/ operator error purposes. Then again, I’ve not used Knoppix since the early versions so it is possible that it has changed in the interim.

I now have my data. First, thank you very much, MannyL for the suggestion to use Knoppix. And also, thanks, cbarnes, for the suggestion on getting Knoppix to burn into a proper boot disc.

As it turns out, this is still correct. I was able to use Knoppix 3.7 which has the Captive NTFS utility, but even after running that, I wasn’t able move the data.

However, my wife suggested that I burn the data to a CD. Which turns out, works, and is how I was finally able to get the data I wanted. So, thanks Tiggrkitty!

Again, thanks for all of the suggestions in both this thread, and my original one. Mods, feel free to close this thread. Asked and answered.

Oh, and Manny, that offer for a beer stands!
