XP pro Boot problem

OK, normally I don’t have any problems with XP or any OP from MS but this has gotten me stumped.

Yesterday I “upgraded” win 2K to XP pro for my GF (legal version my friend got for going to a MS convention). While upgrading a 4in1 via issue came up. We couldn’t find the CD so I cancelled the “find file” message and it contined to install.

The reboot came up and it didn’t work. I got the BSoD with the 7B error (drive or drive controller error) and I couldn’t get passed it with safe mode.

I’ve tried to find a XP pro boot disk but it doesn’t allow me to create one (only a “DOS BOOT disk” and it doesn’t so anything).

I have an 2K NT boot disk that I’m going to try tonight. I also brought my laptop with the via drivers.

So the question. Will the NT boot disk allow me to boot an XP partition? Will it grant me access to the CDROM? I thought XP allowed boot from CD but nothing worked last night and I gave up. Is there any way to force XP to re-install? The OS keeps trying to boot up normally but the BSoD keeps coming up!

I’m getting annoyed and ready to clear the drive but even if I do, XP won’t boot on the CD. Is there someplace online where I can get a XP boot disk? The legal “not for distribution” CD I got didn’t come with it. Are there any other methods for forcing a reinstall? XP does not allow me to by-pass the startup screen (safe mode, normal, and last good config all don’t work). I cannot get into the CD from DOS because I can’t load the CDROM drivers and the “boot from CD” doesn’t want to work (even with the WIN2K CD!).

Thanks for any help!

Hmm, maybe you could tell us what kind of computer this is, as there are several ways to do this.

Boot disks are usually found at bootdisk.com
