Krispy Kreme for or against

I suppose this could go in Great Debates, but a clear hijack is occuring in this thread so I thought I had better get something started.

I’ll start with my story. I heard about Krispy Kreme for the first time on Christmass Eve one year. Apparently a new one had just opened up in the area recently and we had actually discussed all going to get some. We decided it was likely not open, or even if it were open, the doughnuts would not be fresh. But this got me psyched about them, because I love Dunkin Donuts and if these were better than man they must be good.

Then I moved elswhere, and there were no Krispy Kremes in the area. Occasionally, some group would sell old Krispy Kreme doughnuts for some reason, but I don’ t think I ever had any.

One day I was on a long trip with my future wife, and we got up and got some Krispy Kreme doughnuts fresh from the machine. She said she loved Krispy Kreme’s so once again I thought, man these must be good. Then i had my first bite. It was solid sugar, and maybe some grease. If there was more grease and less sugar I might even think they were palatable. But it was all sugar. I cannot eat those disgusting things. As far as I can tell, Krispy Kreme doughnuts are all hype and no substance.

Others of course dissagree. So share here rather than hijacking another thread.

KK is shit- Dunkin Donuts rules.

Lamar’s rules, Winchell’s are ok, Krispy Kreme is Krap.

KK is over-rated. Dunkin is passable. The best doughnuts come from the little stripmall sites that double as Chinese take-out after about 10am.

After hearing the “Krispy Kreme is the greatest accomplishment of mankind!” talk for years I found that I hated them when I finally tried them. Much like you, I was completely turned off by the cotton-candy donut taste they had.

KK is king. No other donuts for me.

Against.

For. I don’t think they’re the end-all be-all of donuts, but they’re still pretty good.

I wouldn’t want to admit it to friends, but I like the suckers.

The glazed ones are very sugary, but I prefer the filled varieties or the devil’s food cake ones - preferably with a coffee type drink.

In any case, the only alternatives around here are the ones at the grocery stores, and they suck. They’re stale and gross. We don’t have Dunkin Donuts or any other chains, and all the independent places seem to be out of business.

Maybe they’re an acquired taste or you have to grow up eating them.

I was looking forward to trying KK too because I heard so much about them. And I love sweets. Lots of grease and sugar, not very good at all.

We used to have a spud nut shop that was killer, KK ain’t all that.

Krispy Kremes are da bomb. I love them.

KK - naughtylicious

DD - real good and close to home

Winchell’s - the best, but I have not seen a Winchell’s in years

OK we’re getting a lot of one-line posters, there must be stories attached. Why do you like Krispy Kreme? Why don’t you like Dunkin Donuts?

I will agree that Dunkin Donuts aren’t the best doughnuts in the world. Especially since I heard they don’t make their doughnuts fresh in the store anymore. The best doughnuts that I have ever had are not chain restraints. Unfortunately, these restraints are few and far between. With today’s health conscious society, doughnuts (a product that is essentially unnecessary sugar and fat.) just can’t survive that easily.

I don’t like Krispy Kreme. When they first came to MN there was so much hype I thought they must be fabulous but then I finally had the chance to try them and was not impressed. It’s hard to say what it is exactly but I think they are just too greasy. My favorite donuts come from the locally owned bakery in my town. They are seriously awesome.

I can buy a can of store-brand biscuits for forty cents, punch holes in them with a bottle top, fry them in vegatable oil and dust them with powdered sugar, or I could go buy KK’s, but the difference would be lost on a donut anesthete such as myself.

Krispy Kremes are made with a bicycle pump.

My first experience with Krispy Kreme donuts was the lemon-filled-glazed one.

(shudders)

Only had KKs once well into the “people lined up around the block for them” hype. Was thoroughly unimpressed. The glaze was unpalatable. Admittedly I bought them in a box that had been on the shelf for a day as opposed to fresh off the line, but I can’t imagine that those few hours made so much difference. I’m just as happy with the donuts from the local grocery’s bakery department.

True dat. Mad props to a (tasty) Kansas City original.
