They started in Sydney about 2 years ago and are inordinately successful. The first store is near me and I would drive past to see people queued out the door in a line weaving round the parking lot. They give away thousands each week to corrupt the unsuspecting. Someone at work suggested I get some for our branch meeting and we tried them but no-one was particularly impressed. As I had seen the poor little buggers swimming in a line across a sea of fat, each a pastry Tom Hanks I was even less inclined to crave the coated Cast Aways.
I like Krispy Kremes to a point. The only way I LOVE them is fresh from the conveyor, BEFORE the curtain of sugar - If you ask, they’ll give ‘em to you - absolutely wonderful. Otherwise, they’re too sweet - tooth hurtin’ sweet.
G
Chief Wiggums: “In the interest of public safety, we have confiscated every donut, bearclaw and croissant in town. Oh, and some coffee.”
Heck, the confectioner’s sugar is the only part that I really like. I eat that part and let my co-workers have the rest.
Well, no wonder you don’t like Krispy Kremes if you like cake doughnuts. I personally feel cake doughnuts are like unsweetened tea–an abomination unto the lord. As for KK being awful for you–well, DUH! I mean, they’re doughnuts, fercrissakes. DD ain’t exactly health food, either. (And I don’t have to take a vacation from grease and sugar to think DD is nasty, either. Every time I eat one of their doughnuts, my mouth feels all greasy and six hours later I get the screaming shits.)
I think you mean sweetened tea is an abomination unto the lord.
Unsweetened tea = refreshing.
Sweetened tea = ‘I need to drink some water to get rid of the taste.’
(Do I sense another thread starting? ‘Sweetened tea vs. Unsweetened tea’)
You have lived up to your name. Sweetened tea, you must be crazy.
What is with you unsweetened tea people? That’s NOT RIGHT, FOLKS.

Oh, CrazyCatLady, I used to like you.
Just kidding, I still like you.
It’s not that I have anything against people who put sugar in their tea (or coffee)…I just give extra points to those who don’t.
Heh, I have Tim Hortons here around every corner, and I don’t see it as a doughnut shop, since I usually go in for ice caps and turkey sandwiches. But there is only one Krispy Kreme here (the only one in western Canada), and before it opened, my friend and I drove to Seattle just to get a couple of boxes. I guess it’s just a matter of preference for taste. I love the light airy crispiness of the doughnuts, and other than the original glazed, I love the caramel filled one, which I have not seen any other place make. It IS really sweet, so that is why I eat it like a desert rather than just a snack. A greasy, fried, fat-straight-to-thighs desert. drools
And we feel the same way about sweetened tea.
It is in my opinion that you should be able to taste tea normally. Why not just drink sugar water?
I also hate Krispy Kremes. My mom loves them, though.
I agree with other pro KK posters - you’re doing it wrong. You don’t get them from Target or some kid selling them for the band or from your office party. You go to the Krispy Kreme store (preferably at 3 AM), but you don’t go unless the big neon sign that says “Fresh Donuts Now!” is lit. If the sign ain’t lit, you must acquit! You go in and you have two donuts or so, not a box. You eat them on the premises with cold milk. Then they are the food of the gods indeed.
They must be eaten hot and fresh right off the belt. If you’re eating them after a couple hours from the box, no wonder you think they’re nasty.
Nasty like, say, unsweet tea. (Who are you traitors calling it “unsweetened”, anyway? It’s “unsweet”. You’re making your mama cry.)
I’ll take Dunkin Donuts or Mr. Donut over KK any day.
I prefer bagels.
Without cream cheese.
I was branded a heretic at work when I revealed I didn’t like Krispy Kremes. When one opened up in this area they all flocked to wait forever on line to get them. I don’t get it. Like most others in this thread, I think they are too sweet and greasy. If I really want a donut, ideally, I would go visit my Mom and have her make them for me - her’s are the best. From a store, I go for DnD. However, I only eat donuts maybe once a month or so, so I am far from a donut expert YMMV.
oh, and it is UNsweetened tea.
Krispy Kreme = Yes
Sweet Tea = Very Yes
Just to chime in. I am from the midwest – you might say part of the heartland of KK doughnuts.
I have never understood the loyalty these nasty, greasy, overly-sweet bombs have. Even though they are bad warm – cold they are worse than some of the things I experienced in my college dorm.
They are a great big fund raiser around here though.
Yes, I hate hate HATE them
I don’t think I want to know how you get the powdered sugar off of the donuts before you give them to your coworkers.
I had a KK donut fresh off the belt when my local store opened. It was still gross. I prefer Winchell’s, or better yet the local donut shops. There’s one called Lee’s Donuts in San Leandro that I like, but they open really early and close in the afternoon so I don’t always get there in time.
I used to work in a doughnut shop, and I think KK puts too much glaze on theirs. Or, it’s not thin enough. It shouldn’t look like that when it gets cool – all white and flaky. That’s just wrong. Our glazed doughnuts were never like that – unless someone didn’t thin the glaze.
And there’s nothing like a doughnut, or cinnamon roll right out of the fryer.
MMMMMMMM…chocolate cake donuts dipped in peanut butter icing. With the icing still warm and gooey.
