Yeast doughnuts taste good.
Put me in the cake donut crowd, though my first handheld breakfast love is
KOLACHES! I don’t think you all have these outside of Texas. Think of a slighlty sweet dough wrapped around spicy link sausage and cheese. The best ones are from little Czech and German convenience stores in central Texas.
Oh, I don’t get the KK fuss either.
There are certain foods that must be eaten soon after frying or they go bad. I mean, look at French fries and pretty much any other deep fried goodie. If you wait more than ten minutes, they become vile. A good yeast-based donut should be eaten right away, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. I only buy one donut at a time, so it makes little difference to me.
Which makes the Krispy Kreme execs look like a bunch of morons, because here they’re selling their “only good for 10 minutes” donuts at places where they can’t possibly have just been made.
Well, they do have more than just their original glazed donut (which needs to be eaten hot, in my opinion.) And Krispy Kreme execs apparently aren’t a bunch of morons because their product still sells like crazy. I really don’t understand it personally, because their cooled down donuts are no better than Dunkin Donuts (which I actually prefer. Yummy krullers.) But for a hot fresh donut, nothing beats Krispy Kreme…at least not around here.
I don’t know the definition of the word “Krispy,” but I’m guessing it doesn’t mean “crispy”. I also don’t know the definition of the word “Kreme;” similarly, I’m guessing it doesn’t mean “cream.”
Still, when I heard all the hype back when Krispy Kreme opened theit first Southern California store in La Habra, and I responded to the hype by buying a Krispy Kreme, and learning that it was neither crispy nor creamy, I felt I had been hoodwinked.
All y’all anti KK people are nuts.
I live in a town bereft of donuts. Oh, there’s a local chain, but my G*d, they suck. Their donuts have rabid adherents, about whom it must be sadly concluded that they have never tasted the wonder that is KK, or DD, or Tim Hortons, or even those nasty-ass stale boxed donuts, as I can’t see how anyone who HAS could stomach one of these monstrosities. Horrid, stale texture, nasty glaze, and “creme” filling made of a cross between menthol and that expanding foam stuff one uses to seal cracks in walls.
Oh, and just try getting a donut in this town after 10 a.m. Can’t be done. Place shuts down by then: if one wants “fresh” donuts – or as “fresh” as they get, better get there by 6:30 a.m. at the latest.
Duke, if you’re ever in the West Springfield, MA area, be sure to spend a little time on Riverdale Street (US Route 5.) On the northbound side, just north of the I-91 interchange, you’ll find a genuine Mister Donut, complete with their vintage early-1960’s sign. You won’t be able to miss it.
Actually, I was introduced to these lovely things while I was living in Ontario, Canada. They were just called sausage biscuits, but… looking at a few recipes, they’re pretty darned similar. And my word, I want…
Y’all can have my share of KK, I’ll be getting some Kulaches/sausage biscuits.
(No relation to the fast food version you may know. bleh.)
I guess they didn’t understand my Southern California accent. When I tried to order these, they brought out a pair of big rubber boots!
Road trip, road trip, road trip…
Seriously. I’ll be out there.
Another vote here that (a) cake donuts are far superior, and (b) KK donuts are gross. Yuck yuck yuck yuck yuck.
Ditto. I prefer the heavier, yeastier grocery donuts over KK as well.
I do like KK custard-filled donuts (not the “creme” filled … blech!).
Love KK, and just brought in two dozen for the co-workers this morning. If the election were held today, I would be Cool Office Guy Of The Week for bringing them in…the two dozen were gone in about 10 minutes.
Anyone remember a chain called Spudnuts from decades ago? Made with potato flour and were actually quite good. Sort of like the KK but slightly heavier in weight and texture.
They make me sick. They’re wayyyyyy too fatty/greasy.
I prefer Dunkin’s.
Cartooniverse
I’ll eat KK’s because they’re convenient, but I think they’re WAY too sweet. Other than that, I kind of like the texture.
In my home town growing up, a local bakery made unbelievable donuts. I’ve lived in a lot of towns with a lot of home made donuts, and never had their equal.
There’s a decent bakery near where I live now in B-more, but they don’t make great donuts.
