Props to the mayor of Nashville, Tenn., who struck a blow for common sense when vetoing the “English-only” legislation. This CNN story has the details:
Finally! Someone came up with a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist! A fart in the general direction of the council for this collossal waste of time. The mayor, who posesses a working brain, vetoed this measure saying,
The measure also possessed such vague wording that:
A supporter of the measure, Councilman Eric Crafton said “it would offer an incentive for immigrants to learn English.” 'Cause, you know, the most pressing need of any immigrant is to be able to attend a city council meeting and understand the debates over stop sign placements.
A politician who’s willing to halt moral-panic legislation which does no earthly good, and will cost the taxpayers money to defend? Has such a thing ever been seen before? Of course, he’s not running for re-election, which the cynic in me whispers probably had a bit to do with his bravery, but nonetheless-- a big pat on the back to Bill Purcell.
(This is not intended to be a debate on immigration, so please, let’s not turn it into one.)
