Kung Fu Hustle

Has anyone seen this? I thought the Looney Tunes-esque parts were kind of lame, but overall I thought it was quite funny, about on par with Shaolin soccer. I really got a kick out of them parodying obscure martial arts disciplines/moves.

Some of the parts that had me in stitches-
The 2 con artists come to Pig Sty Alley trying to pass off as the leader of the Axe Gang and his lieutenant. The mastermind of the plan tries to pick a fight with the poor people, and every person he points out has some trait that intimidates him.

The Onion lady punches him so hard he ruptures something
The ‘short guy’ is actually some 8 foot tall guy that was just sitting down :stuck_out_tongue:
The ‘old guy’ and ‘kid’ turn out to be really ripped.
Also,

The bit in the middle where they are trying to kill the landlady by throwing knives at her was a riot. Then when they are fleeing the one guy trips and falls on top of a bunch of cobras :smack:

Yes, it is an riotous act. Did you watch a dubbed verison or a subtitled verison? This show is like “Shrek” to traditional animation. It makes fun a lot of common cliches in the wuxia genres, which doesn’t translate well to English, so I am just curious how they deal with those…

I saw the subtitled version. I hate dubbed films, generally.

Depending on how much wuxia Americans have seen, I think I caught a fair share of refernces.

Overall-- funny movie. I caught it and Shoalin Soccer within two weeks of each other. In fact, The Shoalin Soccer reference in Kung Fu Hustle made me laugh.

I thought it was hilarious! I loved it but there was one thing I didn’t get, probably a cultural humor thing but…

…what was up with the droopy pants guy, whose butt was always hanging out?

It’s a bit goofier than some people might like, but I enjoyed myself quite a lot–much more than I expected from the TV ads, etc. suggested.

It would have been nice if the newest Star Wars had one single fight that matched the sheer ingenuity, inventiveness, and excitement of any of the fights in this film. The CGI may not have been as “polished”, but it didn’t matter because everything else–the things that matter (style, story, characters, humor)–was so well-executed. Highly recommended.

I didn’t get that guy either. At one point you see him squatting in the middle of what I guess is their living room (as far as dirt-poor spartan abodes go) and I turned to my friend and asked, "Is that guy taking a dump in the middle of his living room?!

I saw it (subtitled version.) I enjoyed it (especially the fight scene involving the koto-like instrument) but was a little let down because I had high expectations after Shaolin Soccer.

think i missed this. what is it?
Corii. WAG - i thought it was a reference to a recent(?) fad with those low cut jeans without thongs.

exactly. i was so itching to say this in one of those star wars thread, but it’ll only end with me being mobbed and my arms chopped off.
cckerberos the zither scene was fantastic. itself worth the price of admission.
great fun to watch. i saw the original cantonese version. i’m still curious about how fans of Crouching Tiger will view this show though, despite them being very different movies.

old thread

Corii, I dont think it had any particular meaning. You are introduced to the guy with his ass hanging out, while he’s squatted down washing his hair. You assume that it was just that one instance. Only later on do you realize he constantly wears his pants like that.

Incubus, I think that was their toilet. A literal shit hole where you squat over, with no privacy.

I had forgotten how funny a bunch of people getting slapped upside the head can be.

On multiple viewings, my favorite scene now is…

when the landlords appear in the car, and give them the ‘warning’. Perfect example of how much can be conveyed non-verbally.
guy steps on ball, says, “No more Soccer!”

thinks no, nothing. guess i’ll just have to watch the show again.
