Kung Pao - the Sauce

Any good/easy recipes for making Kung Pao sauce?

any hints as to where to get a good “jar” version?

Any other “chinese” sauce recipes?

Keep in mind, I only really have a Krogers/Miejers to pick up the materials, so keep it pretty ‘simple’ if at all possible.

Thanks!

I’ve tried this recipe on Wikicooks, and it turned out pretty good considering that I had neither a gas stove nor a wok at the time. The sauce is pretty simple: it’s just some oyster sauce, rice wine, and soy sauce. I can virtually guarantee you thatt you’ll be able to find the first two in the same place you’d find soy sauce at the store. Some places even have pre-prepared kung pao sauce, so you might want to try that too.

Finding dried chilis, though, that can be hit or miss. I’ve been able to find them at maybe 1 of every 2 grocery stores I’ve been to in the last few years. I got away with using red pepper flakes. Also, I don’t know how good you are at cooking chicken, but I had to marinate it for much longer than they said to prevent it from having the consistency of soggy pine.

Here’s the recipe I’ve been fixing since grad school. The ingredients are pretty simple. Good Luck!
