Kwame and Detroit again

Kwame Kilpatrick was mayor of Detroit . Now he is in jail. The feds just dropped indictments on him, his dad Bernard, Bobby Ferguson, Derrick Miller and Victor Mercado. I believe there are 97 charges in all, including extortion from city contractors and non profit donors. It also includes bribery. These guys were Kwame’s inner circle. At present there are another 15 of his aides and cohorts facing or found guilty of bribery or felony conspiracy charges.
Anybody want to guess why Detroit is having so much trouble? It was common knowledge that if you were bidding on a contract, you went through Kwame’s dad, and it would cost you. The whole city government was a den of thieves, looting and bribing their way through Detroit’s money.
Now some suburbs who get their water through Detroit are looking into the costs that Detroit kept raising. This mess could go on for a long time.

Thus is gonna make such a great movie!

there’s already plenty of mob movies out there :stuck_out_tongue:

what really gets me is how many people seem to think Kilpatrick is getting a “raw deal” on this. Sometimes I think that what’s left of the City of Detroit is not worth saving.

But it would! There’s not just the bribery. There’s all kind of sex, street violence, coverups and corruption. There’s the wild party, the dead stripper, the secret affair with the beautiful chief of staff, physical altercations with the scorned wife, the Congresswoman mother married to the shady businesman, the mayor threatening or assaulting a police officer, stymied police investigations, shady business associates and high-ranking law officials and businessmen who seem to be either part of the coverup, or supporting the criminals for unexplained reasons. It would be a great cable series: “The Kilpatricks”.

If he got out of jail, he would probably get re-elected.

You have answered your own question.

He can’t. The Kwame amendment passed. He’d have to wait 20 years.

a long history of corrupt and incompetent city “leadership.”

a constant “us vs. them” standoff with the suburbs, esp. the city of Warren and Oakland County. seriously, L. Brooks Patterson might as well be Satan himself as far as Detroit city council was concerned.

the notion that the evil suburbs are trying to steal all of Detroit’s “jewels,” as if they have any left. The “jewel” thing was what Monica Conyers bitched about with the Cobo Center proposals. Calling Cobo a “jewel” just showed how delusional the council was.

The mentality that “we have to get what’s coming to us” and “we’ll let you (the suburbs) help us, but you’re gonna help us the way we tell you to.”

I think the term “entitlement-minded” gets used too much in general, but it really applies to the “leadership” of the City of Detroit.

Great, a sequel!

And when the cycle repeats a 3rd time, we’ll have a family crime drama trilogy to rival The Godfather Saga.

Oh those wacky Irish.
