Splitting off from when this incident was mistakenly put in a pit thread about Republicans:

Basically, leaders of LA City Council caught on tape disparaging African-American voters, members, and member’s child.
This apparently while discussing redistrictings and how to maximize their incumbencies, which itself is business as usual but they chose to fail to weaselword it.
A union leader in the conversation already forced out of his job, the Council President leaves that chair but not the council, and Democrats all the way up to Biden calling on them to go.
The members involved apparently take the position they have no reason to go. The last council meeting was, er, less than pleasant.
One wonders how people keep forgetting that everyone’s on tape today.
Their political careers are now dead, dead, dead. They insulted Black people, indigenous Mexicans, Armenians, and Jews. That is a losing combination in Los Angeles. The mayor, governor, and even President Biden have all called for their resignations.
Only questions at this point are who taped the conversation and who released it. I’m guessing it’s all internal squabbling among L.A. Democrats.
I saw this covered yesterday on PBS Newshour. It looks bad because it rinses-off the sheen that California, and Los Angeles in particular, is a happy salad bowl of diversity. It’s news because what was said was really ugly. Under the surface the different groups in power are working to keep themselves in power and further their agendas - that part is not news.
They are white latinos, so it’s not really that surprising, but it proves there is no black- brown coalition. LA has been like this for at least 40 years there was never a sheen on it.
Central, South America as well as the Caribbean are really racist, a better word would be colorist. They are hypersensitive to gradients in skin tone and hair texture. The closer a person is to the Eruopean Spanish look the better they are treated. Everyone else is just mixed to some degree, and the less Eruopean traits a person has the worse they are treated. Mexico and Brazil are probably the worst at this colorism.
They are however not treated as white in the U.S. for the most part right now, but they see themselves as white. They see themselves as the next Irish or Italians that were also not seen as white at first.
And ISTM a lot of classic Machine-Politician entitlement. We worked to get this power and aren’t sharing it w/o a fight, everyone else better know their place, this town is OURS.
That is pretty much exactly what it is, and the easily identified enemy is black people. LA has been like this my whole life and once again I’m 50. Miami is the same way but with Cubans instead. I wasn’t shocked when they voted for Trump and the Republicans. The mindset all goes back to where the slaves where from.
But here is the twist, it’s also why a lot of black men voted for Trump in '20. Black men saw the threat, it’s been there for at least 40 years, and Trump was saying he was going to address it by closing the southern border. It was a bull that he would actually do anything, but it sounded good compared to the Democrats saying let them in.
I can get really deep into this but I’m just going to say I’m glad the reality is out there now for everyone to see.
Over the weekend, there were protests against the two council members who not yet resigned. I’m not sure why they haven’t yet. They are no longer welcome among the city power brokers.
There’s also talk about increasing the number of council members. The fifteen current members represent 4 million residents of the city. The city had one-tenth that population when that number was set.
Even worse is the situation with L.A. County. Five supervisors for a population of almost 10 million. I’ve heard that L.A. County supervisors represent the largest population of any district representative in the US.
