L.A. Dopers -- Are you ready for Carmageddon?

I live on the Westside and work Saturdays. I actually canceled my clients for the 16th and took a vacation day. I’m going to see Harry Potter at a theater only a few blocks from my house, so I’m hoping the traffic won’t affect me on such a short trip.

Pretty minor unless you live in one of the neighborhoods nearby. Mulholland Drive doesn’t connect anything important, so the long-term closure of the bridge won’t affect city-wide traffic patterns much at all.

They have signs about it lit up on 880 in the Bay Area. How long to they expect that backup to be? :stuck_out_tongue:

I sincerely thank you for sharing this. Not only was this truly funny, and caused me to laugh out loud and heartily, I also really, really needed a laugh.

This and Flight of the Conchords “It’s Business Time” are now my default YouTube videos for when I need nothing on Earth more than to smile.

I don’t have any major plans this weekend, but I am a little bit concerned. I live in the valley about a mile east of the 405, and I’m a little worried about what street traffic in the area is going to end up being like.

On the plus side, I don’t really have to go anywhere this weekend, so it’ll probably only be as big a deal as I allow it to be.

That’s miles of freeway closed, including the ramps. Good luck.

Does anybody know how the bridge is going to be demolished in such a short period of time? Are explosives involved?

So I guess this would be a bad weekend to plan a Dopefest at the Getty?

I need to go from the CA 126 to the 5, do you think I’ll have any problems?

True, however these routes already have no shortage of traffic even when the 405 is in use. When additional traffic is added to these streets it will have a progressive effect on those streets as well as other major streets they intersect (In my experience, I’ve encountered far too much evidence that Angelenos haven’t really mastered the “Don’t block the box” concept.

That said, although I do have to cross beneath the 405 around the time they’ll start closing ramps on Friday evening on my way home from work, I’m optimistic that I won’t encounter too much apart from some crowded intersections. Fortunately, I don’t have to take the freeway to work and seldom need to drive anywhere on the weekend (my slice of Culver City is supremely walkable).

That junction is well north of where the 405 rejoins the 5. If anything, traffic should be lighter since the northbound 405 will be feeding less traffic onto the 5.

I was thinking that if he went from the 126 East to the 5 South, he might hit traffic if the 405 south backed up onto the 5. But I don’t know how far that stretch of the 405 is, I live in San Diego.

No, not likely…they will probably use hydrolic breakers and do one side of the bridge on one day, and the other side on the next day. My BIL has a 10k# breaker and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is going to be part of the demolition team that weekend.

My concern is the clueless people in Reseda–for example–who get up Saturday morning, decide to go shopping, mindlessly type “Third Street Promenade” into their GPS, and blithely get on the freeway with their 52 oz. Supergulp. Will Google–in all of its wisdom–know to direct them to Topanga Canyon or something? Or better yet, maybe it should just say:

“Try walking somewhere today.”

That made me laugh out loud too.

I live in Pasadena and am wondering if people might take the 110 as a detour, which Hitler scoffed at.

The LA Times reported that the contractors will be fined $6000 for every 10 minutes they run over schedule.

Apparently, JetBlue has a solution for all of us:

$4?? You’ld think they would burn that amount in avgas just starting up the engines!

I just keeping thinking that I only live about 10 minutes from Burbank Airport, and there IS a Roscoe’s in Long Beach…

Off topic, when did you move up here? I’m near the 405/victory area.

And it doesn’t involve giant slingshots?

(Edit: it sold out between the first and second times I looked at the link…)
