Labor Day KY Dopefest?

Actually… there is the Lexington Children’s Museum. They’d probably really enjoy that. It’s kind of small, but everything is hands on. It’s on Short Street right next to Lexington Children’s Theatre… ((where I used to work. :D)) Plus all the Victorian Square shops are around there, so that’s kind of a cool thing to do. And DeSha’s is also there. They make a very wicked Hot Brown, not at as good as Ramsey’s or Columbia’s, but still pretty dang good.

Also, I would suggest Keeneland as a point of interest. If you’re gonna go to Lexington, KY (The horse capital of the world.), you might as well look at some horses.

Simetra, I’m sure we know people in common. I work at KET.

Hamadryad, my oldest is 6 too! The Children’s Museum is pretty good, though small. There are many, many hotels to choose from in all price ranges. Do you want to be near downtown? Then you’ll have the Hyatt and Radisson to contend with. If you’re interested in the more Holiday Inn-type places, I can help you out. Email me and I’d be glad to peruse the phone book. If you know where you all and Ms. Mock and the Dog will be meeting up with you, I can place you in approximately the correct part of town.

Back to the kiddies, our parks are pretty nice, with new playground equipment. Woodland Park is centrally located and has a playground that’s toddler-size. There is a public pool, which should still be open through Labor Day. It was recently remodeled in the ‘water park’ style. Nearby is Ramsey’s, another good restaurant, if you’re up fer home cookin.’

Doctor J – I’ve always been amused by the altar-as-bar, though not atheist. Catholics have a sense of humor too.

<bump>

Is this being planned? Is it still on for Lexington? Are you ignoring me in the fervent hope I won’t come skulking around?

Anyway, I wanted to mention that, while you can visit Keeneland, the fall meet isn’t until October, so if you go there you won’t see any actual horses. Many thoroughbreds may be viewed for free from the comfort of your vehicle, if you care to drive around the Fayette County countryside.

I hope everyone who visits has a good time!

Well, per Tequila Mockingbird this will happen this weekend at a Comfort Suites. I will try to come down there on Saturday night. Let me know how to find you if you depart to parts unknown, particularly if there is no one registered under the name of Mockingbird, Snow, Dude, Dr J, Simetra, Xizor, Hamadryad, etc., you get the picture.

Also, is there some sort of cleansing or purification ritual involving a sacrifical virgin and Superdude or Thinksnow? This may be something to be done, you know, better safe than sorry.

Well, if there were, I couldn’t tell you now could I?

Emails have been sent to all who have expressed an interest. If anyone else is interested, let me know soon and I’ll shoot you an email with our loose plans. dwyr, will you be working Saturday night? (I noticed in another thread you said you’d be in Lexington.) You’re welcome to come along if you have the time.

Hey think, I do believe I am a massage virgin. [sub]At least one o’ dose think’s magic massages I keep hearing about, anyway.[/sub]

Okay, so now we know where, what about when? Saturday, I’m guessing? Early-mid evening perhaps? Does Joe B.'s take reservations? Details, folks, I crave details!

Jeez, I was hoping you were more into virgins of the female persuasion…

Well of course I am. The males are passed off to SuperDude* for indoctrination.

A “KY” dopefest?

What, umm, exactly, are you going to be doing at this thing?

Well, sorry to disappoint you, thinksnow, and everyone else, but I will be unable to attend. I will be in Chicago, participating in some Waitress Wooing.

Thanks, Ellen! 96 miles, no problem. 1 hour 51 minutes, how thick is that Lexington trafffic?

Any other CincyDopers thinking about coming down?

Tequila would you e-mail info, please?

Any rules against an absolute, fresh-as-falling-snow newbie joining in on the reindeer games? I was beyond hope that the Dope would roll around to the Bluegrass. By the way, Lexington has something along the lines of a Discovery Zone (or is it Kids Zone?) that has all sorts of activities for the kids to run themselves to an early nap while parents can take a much needed respite.

Emails have been sent. I haven’t yet made any reservations because I don’t know how many are planning to attend, and if anyone is bringing their SO, grandmother, friends, etc. Much thanks Ellen, you are now officially my hero for finding the info for Joe B’s.
Cherry_Blossom_, you are more than welcome to come to this little event, though I doubt it’ll come close to levels of debauchery acheived in Chicago. Well, maybe it will, after all think is coming…erhm, he’s planning to attend anyway.

C’mon, I’m going to be there…that should be enough reason for people to be buying plane tickes and stuff.

snort…a collective “AS IF!” rises from the crowd…

Anyhow, I’ll be thrilled to meet any of y’all…

Okay, I’m sort of trying to arrange this from St Louis, so there’s no real “set” plans, other than dinner at Joe B’s at 5:30 or 6 on Sat night. I haven’t made reservations yet because I am unsure of how many people are planning to attend. I guess I could ask for a table of 20 or so… I am looking forward to meeting everyone! I am also planning to bring my digi cam, so consider yourselves warned

I will try to leave a message at the desk of the hotel that we and Ham will be at, something along the line’s of “Uncle Cecil’s Reunion Party”…not sure if the hotel will comply… If they don’t, ask for Laurel Brooks. We should be there sometime Friday early afternoon.

I also am planning to take along my laptop, so I should be able to receive emails.

Just winging it right now, but anybody who is in the area is more than welcome to drop by!

I had so planned on attending this, my first dopefest. But alas work calls and I have to go to DC :(. So everybody will have to keep on wondering what I really look like for a while longer.

I think you’re thinking of Kids Place ( http://www.lexingtonathleticclub.com/kidsPlace/ ). I do their website (well, the company I work for does, and I’m the one that does the actual work on it.) Kids Place makes me wish I was young enough to play on all the equipment, but bleah, I’m not. I’m another Lexington-person, but unfortunately, I will be gone to WV for the weekend to visit my family.

As for Joe Bologna’s: I don’t think they take reservations. I would recommend calling them ahead of time, and if they don’t, plan on eating a fairly early dinner, because the wait there can get ridiculously long. (can you say run-on sentence?) If you find it unbearable, there’s a pretty good Indian restaurant behind it that’s not all that busy at dinnertime.

As for seeing horses, I would recommend the KY Horse Park. It’s pretty easy to find: just get on 75 N, and you’ll see signs to it. I’ve never been, but I’ve only heard good things about it.

Something else to do, at night: Walk downtown. Triangle Park, right beside Rupp Arena, is beautiful at night. It’s a pretty safe area, too. It’s across from the aforementioned DeSha’s. Also, be sure not to miss the castle in Versailles. Just drive out Versailles Road (US 60, towards Versailles), and you’ll see it on your right, about five miles outside of Lexington.) Oh… and be sure to get some Graeter’s ice cream. Look in the phonebook for locations. It’s some of the best ice cream you’ll ever eat (and recently featured on the Food Network.)

Enough from me. I hope everyone has fun in Lexington, and enjoys the town immensely. It’s not the most touristy place on earth, but it’s a nice town. If you have any questions I might be able to answer, just post them here!

Since Joe Bologna’s tends to get crowded at dinner, what about trying for lunch? Then we could go to a park (I’d suggest Woodland), so the kids could run around, and the adults could still talk, in a nice outdoor setting. The more ambitious could go to Kids Place. (I’ve been there a number of times; it’s huge and the kids have a ball. It’s a favorite birthday party spot.)

I won’t be able to do anything Saturday night, so I would prefer an afternoon gathering – but if evening is more convenient for everyone, please do that.
