I will certianly take some pictures and post them so you can all see how incredibly hot I will be at the Christmas party!
The only reason I would hesitate to leave my hair down is because since it is wavy I can brush and style it for and hour and a half and 3 minutes after I am done it looks like I got my hair caught in a blender. It isn’t sleek like straight hair and the waves aren’t defined and sexy they way curls are, it just sits there and the slightest breeze undoes any styling I might have attempted. I might try to pull it back in such a way that it isn’t up but that it isn’t just left down either.
To be fair to irishgirl, I’ve seen the tights + open toed shoes (not sure about sandals) in fashion mags this fall. This includes silver open toed shoes with BRIGHT BLUE solid tights. It’s probably one of those “SUCH a ‘no’ that we’re turning it into a ‘yes’ for fun” things, but I liked the look of the blue I saw.
I think I know exactly what you mean. I have hair like that and hated it for many years, until I discovered that if I dry it very gently (by air or with the lowest settings on the blow dryer) it is enough wavier to look OK.
Is frizz an issue? I’m sort of trying to picture why you think your hair looks so bad . . . in lieu of an actual picture of you, can you find one on the intrawebs that is similar? I could probably offer some tips . . . i have experience with problem hair. . .
ya know, i saw the “festive” in the clothes description, and thought: “oooohhhh, a tree dress. or one of “those” holiday sweaters.”
aren’t you glad you found a dress before this post?
for your hair perhaps you could go festive? there are nifty holiday hair things, bands in plaids, ponytail holders/barrettes in silver or gold, etc. i have velvet ponytail holders and pearl ones. they look very nice with red hair.
also try hair sticks, bead stores tend to have them and they do hold. i have very swooshy, slippery hair that doesn’t hold anything well. when i would use hair sticks, i would put my hair up slightly damp and go 12 hours plus without my hair slipping. mei fa has a very good selection and should be easy to find in nyc.
Hmmm… I can’t get hair sticks to do anything but fall out/off of my head.
If your hair is wavy–why not let it air dry and scrunch it? you can use gel or mousse to help hold the curls in. When I want my curls to stay, I do NOT brush my hair. Heresy, I know, but it keeps the curls in and the frizz out. Just a thought.
My hair isn’t horrible, it just needs a lot more work than I have time to commit to it to look good when left down. I actually have beautiful hair but I think you have to have natually wavy hair to understand the issue. It isn’t exactly frizz, it just separates itself in such a way as to never look kempt. I might wash it and let it air dry with some mousse or gel or something to take advantage of the wavy without the awkwardness of it all.
If you’re in NYC, don’t decide this until the day of the party. Silver heels sounds nice now, but what if you set your heart on wearing them and another storm blows through like the one this week? Silver jewelry would go with either, so it shouldn’t be too much of a problem (besides feeling anixious, maybe) to decide which to wear at the last minute.
I have thick, wavy to curly hair. If I don’t pull it back and up, I look like I just rolled out of bed. But that is sort of the look nowadays, no? You want something like planned spontaneity for your hair. I think you can get it with mousse or gel (light gel-no spikes!). Or you can force it with either flatiron (no curls, but very different look), or curling iron and some light hairspray. Mostly, I think you just need to style it and don’t touch it or run your hands through it–that always kills my hair.
What I have decided to do is after I took a shower last night I slept with my hair wet so it was still slightly damp this morning and then I braided it so tonight all I have to do is take it down and run my fingers through it to make it look decent. That way it is still wavy but it is more controlled than normal and it can be left down without being all over the place.
Ergh, you made a decision before I got to make my favorite hairstyle suggestion.
I lost all my hair this year, but LAST year, I had long wawvy (actually, I called it wrinkled) hair that was a bit difficult to style in any sort of fancy way. I had every frizz issue possible, despite it not actually being dry or in bad condition. Just difficult to style.
I read somewhere online a supereasy chignon style that I adopted as my fancy hairdo and it only takes about 10 minutes. In case you change your mind -
Step 1, wash/dry hair and rub a bit of leave-in conditioner and a bit of gel or mousse or whatever you have. Spend as little time as possible combing or brushing throughout the process.
2 - pull hair until TWO even ponytails, one right on top of the other, about where you would wear a low ponytail.
3 - Grab sections of (lower tail first) hair about the thickness of your finger. Twist about 5-6 times, then tuck the end of the twisted section back into the pony holder.
4 - Repeat until out of hair, then do the same for the top. You can wrap the last section over the ponytail holders to hide them if you want.
It looks gorgeous, and it extremely easy. I got it totally right on my first try. If you’re feeling motivated, you can use much smaller sections and twist them a lot more times for a different look, but it’s time consuming and necessary to make them even. The larger sections can be different - it looks nice.
I will have to keep that in mind. It sounds like it would be awesome but I don’t know if I want the first time I try something to be an hour before the office party! I might give it a shot and if it comes out badly just brush it out and hope for the best.
