I’m nearing the end of my pregnancy and so going to the OB once a week these days. This morning I had a little momentary debate in my head whether my socks should come off or not. Leaving them on felt weird…black socks and pasty white legs are not a good combination. But I did end up leaving them on since a) I haven’t really been able to reach my feet for awhile and am desperately in need of a pedicure and b) it was kind of cold and I didn’t know how long I would be waiting. I hate getting cold toes!
But anyway it got me wondering what other women usually do. Does my doc think I’m weird for leaving my socks on? Or is that the norm? What say you, ladies?
I said “it depends”. I almost never wear close toed shoes (except for the gym and I never where gym shoes anywhere else) so therefore rarely have socks on. But if I did I would definitely leave them on. Those stirrups are cold!
I chose “it depends”. In the summer, chances are that I’m not wearing socks to begin with. Any other time, keeping my feet warm trumps my sense of style.
me too, I picture a fuming doc…“Dammit, I’m a gynecologist not a podiatrist!”
something tells me OB/GYNs have a pretty high bar for squick. I cannot imagine anything an even halfway normal women does striking a OB/GYN as “weird”. They have seen weird, socks don’t even come close.
Same here. That is, I do wear closed shoes, but I don’t go out of my way to put on socks at the OB/GYN. But if I had them on to begin with, I’d keep them on.
I also thought you were a guy. I guess I just read your name more as WOOKIE, than WOOKIN…
My current gyn has covers that look like potholders (oven mits?) on the stirrups. I looked at them the last time I was having the annual torture, and they were advertisements from a pharmaceutical company.
The exam rooms at my clinic are pretty cold, so I leave my socks on.
If I’m wearing socks they stay on. I’m just more (physically) comfortable that way. Even if the exam room isn’t cold, I don’t like being barefoot indoors, except at home.
I’m thunderstruck that anyone would be self-conscious about how they look with socks on at the doctor’s office. I’m as self-conscious, and as fashion conscious, as they come, and even I know that no one is going to notice your feet/socks, unless they are on fire.
A million years ago at my very first gyn appointment, the nurse suggested I leave my socks on. She said it helped some women feel a little less exposed. So I have always left my socks on. I doubt it would make any difference at this point, but it just became a habit.
I generally leave my socks on. Also, as a doc who does a fair number of exams most women leave their socks on. Although that’s skewed because I’m in the ED and you definitely don’t want to be barefoot on those floors.
It’s really never crossed my mind. I mean, really, the only reason anything comes off is they NEED to so the doc can have access to the bits. There’s no reason for a GYN appointment to involve foot inspections.
