Ladies: Where do you shop for elegant/sophisticated suits?

I’m looking for a tailored suit that isn’t trendy…I want to be able to wear it for a few years. I only want to spend about $150. Where should I look?

Your dreams, sadly. If you want a suit to last five years or so, I think you’re going to have to cough up more money—not for a “label,” but for good material, workmanship, lining, etc.

Ann Taylor has well-made suits, and of course department stores like Lord & Taylor’s and . . . ummm . . . Jeez, the rest of the good ones are out of business.

I don’t know where you are at, but in Canada you could try Laura, or Fairweather. Their stuff is reasonably good quality without being super, super expensive.

Ann Taylor on the first day of a sale. That’s where I got my light blue, wool/silk blend suit for $125.

If you have an upscale thrift or consignment shop in your area, they can be a good source. I got quite a nice pants suit once for $30 at an AIDS charity thrift shop on 23rd st. in NYC.

For quality, one must pay.

Casual Corner/Petite Sophisticate has a nice line of “classic” suits that might be close to your price range.

Eve, yeah…it’s been a few years since I bought a suit. I actually get most of them as gifts. I’m hoping the After Christmas Sales will offer up something good at a good price.

I used to go to Petite Sophisticate, but they tend to be more conservative than my tastes run. I don’t want anything over the top, but some of their stuff is downright frumpy! I’d like a fitted jacket and a narrow skirt – and navy or black, as I plan to wear it to a funeral soon.

Another vote for Ann Taylor, and another vote for wait for the sales.

You could also try Brooks Brothers during a sale.

I’m definitely going to give Ann Taylor a look.
