Lake Lillian, Minnesota

In Cecil’s column published in Return of the Straight Dope and located here:
http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_167.html

he mentions Lake Lillian, Minnesota. There are now pictures of Lake Lillian (including some of the First State Bank) available online at:

HMM, there is a Lelia Lake in the Texas panhandle. No bankthere though, there is a gin and a church. They don’t have a website but you can find it here ; Index of Landmarks & Vanished Communities of Donley County, Texas http://www.granbury.com/~landmark/donley.htm
It was named after the sister-in-law of County Judge Gyp Brown. There are 125 folks there, and all of them are smarter than to use a 33 cent stamp to get a 25 cent rebate.

I believe you send the rebate in a Business Reply envelope, which means the company picks up the postage for you.

Although Cecil’s column talks about the micro rebate checks isssued by First State Bank, I recently got a monitor rebate check through them that was for $30. And it was issued as a bearer’s check – the payment line said Pay to [my name] or bearer – which is essentually the same as cash, so I thought that the whole process could have been a little more secure. I doubt that any crooks would be tempted to steal a pile of 25-cent bearer’s checks, but a bag of $30 ones would be a nice haul.
