Lamps and bugs

Does anyone else here love lamps? What other simple things combine function and form so well?

The one on the computer table has two white glass globes with thin gold lines painted on them, and the metal part is kinda like brass but not shiny. There are bulbs in the bottom and the top globes, and the light can be bright enough to read by, or just a night light.

The one by the reading chair is brass, pleated white shade, two bulbs, each operated by a small dangly chain.

A couple are from auctions, ceramic, white with painted flowers and white silk shades. One’s short and squat, and the other is tall, and the painted flowers are highlighted with silver and gold. ($6 for one and $8 for the other.)

Lucked into an Aladdin at another auction. That one is a buttery colored glass, and the design on the shade looks like glue was laid down in a pattern and fuzzies were sprinkled over it. Some of the fuzzies have rubbed off, but it feels like a treasure.

The one by the main bed is a tallish brass with a navy pleated shade, and the spare bedroom lamps are clear cut glass. ($12, from an auction.)

The older ones are special, when you think about who had them, and what the light might have been used for. Reading Tarzan adventures or Farm Journal magazines, quilting, tatting, maybe. I really love lamps. Anyone else?

Oh, and we were invaded by bugs today. Little round things that look like lady bugs, only they’re orange, and a bit bigger, and the f***ers bite. They’re all over the place. God’s creatures or not, I hope they all die soon.

I’ve got a friend who makes lamps, and it seems cool, but there’s no money in it. She makes the shades out of handmade paper and welds frames that look like box kites and giant white carp standing on end, Oriental-modern fusion.

I’d love to help her full time, but I have to pay the rent. (She has sweet deal and basically sponges off the landlord for her rent)

Box kites and carp, huh? Do they function well as lamps too?

I’d like to be able to duplicate the effects of natural light, at different times of the day. Sometimes light can be as evocative as smells and sounds.

Especially light coming through blinds, and sunlight shining through trees and making shadows on the walls.

Could your friend make lamps to duplicate that?

Maybe it’s better that these things are rare, or else we wouldn’t appreciate them so much.
