LAN Questions

I just set up a LAN between two Windows XP computers. As is, one is able to share the Internet connection of the other, but not visa-versa. Can I set it up so that when either one of the computers is connected to the net, the other one (which isn’t directly online) will access the net through the computer that is online?

Also, is there a way to browse the other computer’s files just as if they were on that respective machine? Right now, I can manually type in a folder name and jump to said folder, but that’s a pain in the ass. It’d be ideal of I could navigate through the folders just as I would on the machine they’re physically on.

Thanks for helping a dunce through this technical dilemma.

You need to setup both computers for internet sharing. What I’m assuming is both copmputers access internet through a modem plus you have an ethernet connection between them. Depending on the version of Windows you may have to install or setup internet connection sharing so the computer itself acts as a router. It looks like that is setup on one but not both.

If you want to see everything you have to setup the root of each disk drive as a shared drive.

Thanks for the help. You also nailed my setup with the dial-up modem, and an ethernet cable connecting the two computers.

However, is there an easy way to access the root drive from the other computer? I already set up said drive for sharing, but I can’t find an easy way to access any of the shared folders (aside from the aforementioned, typing in the name of the folder)

Double click on My Computer, or if you have windows explorer on your desktop, click on that. (that’s windows explorer, not internet explorer.)
go to tools, map network drive.
when the little box comes up, click browse. keep hitting the little plus signs til you find your shared drive.
select the drive, and then hit OK

From now on, the other drive will show up in My Computer as an accessable drive.

If you don’t already have windows explorer on your desktop, i suggest it… it makes browsing easier IMO.

Go to C,windows and it’s there… just send to desktop as shortcut (it’s the icon with the magnifying glass over the folder)

Well, I tried the map drive thing. I clicked the “+” for my network name on one of the computers, and sure enough, it showed both computers on the network. However, when I tried the Map Drive on the other computer, nothing appeared under the network name (and that’s the computer that I really want it on). Most confusing…
