Down here in Australia we’ve had a bit of rain recently after probably a decade or so of drought. The Murray River, one of the main rivers in Aus is currently in flood at it’s highest point I’ve seen since 1974.
I grew up in the town of Tocumwal, right on the Murray, I’ve been in Melbourne for 30 years but still take an interest in what’s happening up there.
I found this Facebook page that has some great photos of rural Australia in flood and how people and the wildlife cope.
Generally the towns are protected by levee banks but the inland areas all flood and the wildlife have to try to find higher ground, not always easy.
Some of the photos include a Brown snake (looks like a 6 footer, highly venomous) swimming in the flood waters, lots of Kangaroos including one swimming, a stranded Koala and a rescued Echidna.
It’s not my page, I have no association with it, I just thought people around the world might like to take a look at some photos of real rural Aus
Thanks for posting, something I would never have know was happening. Aside from the brown snake, it looks nice there - I pulled up Tocumwal on Google Earth to have a look around the area.
Tocumwal is a holiday destination for campers in summer on the river. Usually when it’s not in flood there’s several good sandy beaches, the towns population swells from just on 2000 to around 3500 during January with all the campers.
I just hope the river goes down enough for the beaches to reappear before Christmas otherwise the towns economy will take a real kick to the nuts.
The flood at the moment is no where near severe enough to make international news, barely even local news except for those around there as there’s no significant threat to lives or property, just inconvenience.
