New Year's Eve heatwave in southern Australia

Maximum temperatures are predicted to hit 41 in Adelaide and 40 in Melbourne. Yikes, that’s hot!

Luckily here in Sydney it’s expected to get to only 27.

Same here, hitting 27 today on the Gold Coast, i’m just happy it’s stopped raining!!

I’m envious. Can you send a little of that heat our way? It’s currently -19C (-2F) here right now. And the furnace went a little wonky today–I think I’ve got it working, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

That’s funny–it’s in the high 20s, low 30s here in NYC this week, too.

It is getting somewhat warm. But it’s a one-off, there’s a cool change tonight in time for teh fireworks to be more pleasant to experience. Not that I’ll be in town to see them.

Personally I can handle 40C in Melbourne better than 30C in Sydney. Clean, dry heat over a hot, wet blanket.

Heading down to the Murray for a break in the New Year with my parents.
The Murray is running and flooding the State Forests, the mosquitos are blanketing.
Hasn’t been hot until now so the fire threat is much lower than usual. (none-the-less, in any year if Vic/SA cops a week of those temperatures, it’s back to being a tinderbox)

There’s flood water in Queensland already heading towards Lake Eyre.
The Diamantina is flowing at Birdsville and the Cooper’s flowing at Innamincka.
There’s still some water in Eyre from 2010 (and a lot in Madigan), so could be a boomer.

Eyre gets water on average once every 10 years, fills once every 25 years and floods once every 80 years. It was thought the fill in 2009 was a once-in-a-generation event. 2010 was bigger and 2011 may be bigger again. Manna for the climate skeptics.

Quite a contrast to the weather 11 days ago.

Ahh, Victoria. If you don’t like the weather… just wait ten minutes.

It’s a lovely evening here in Sydney now. Happy new year soon! We’re headed on off up a local hill to watch the fireworks.

Poor babies. It’s been that hot in Perth for weeks.

Hope you have a good spot. Best one I heard is a guy I work with. He’s visiting his sister who is on a Navy vessel moored on the harbour.
