What a lovely balmy day to start the New Year

Check out the NSW weather observations for today. 42.3C (108F) where I am and it’s only 1:30, so should get even hotter before 5:00.

Bankstown Airport 43.1

And I need to go shopping. Hmm…

It was so “balmy” here in Las Vegas, on New Year’s Eve day, that half of our Christmas decorations came flying down and crashing.

We’re hoping the winds die down in the next hour and a half to allow for the fireworks - they won’t happen if the winds are over 10 mph, and today they reached over 40 mph!

It is nice and warm for the season…mid 60’s…so quite happy about that…will be better weather to walk a few blocks tomorrow to try to find the rest of my Christmas decorations.

7.30pm and it’s still 41 at my place. Please, please let the cool change arrive soon.

It went through Nowra at 7:00. From 38.2 to 26.5 in 7 minutes. It’s coming.

Last reading from my local Automatic Weather Station (Canterbury) is still 40.3C (at nearly 8pm!!), but I think I can feel a bit of cool wind coming up as I type this. Gawd, I hope so. Might be able to get some sleep tonight…

The winds have come to the Central Coast! Just in time to fan the bushfires! We can see them from our house and I feel like I live in a bar because of the smoke. There’s enough stuff between us and them, though, that we’re safe.

Oh, but the cool winds…aaaaaaaaahhhhhh. Six months pregnant, no air conditioning, and the hottest New Years on record was not a good combo. I think I ate about 20 gallons of ice today.

The mid-Atlantic coast is quite mild for this time of year - our low right now is considerably higher than the normal low. By next weekend. we’ll be below average again, but we’ve got 2 or 3 days above freezing. Yay!

I have never seen weather like this. Have a look at the Sydney Harbour readings (in reverse):

In Melbourne yesterday they changed the forecast maximum down to 33C when the Southerly hit early but later revised it up to 42C when afternoon temperatures rose.

Melbourne was sweltering yesterday - over 42 deg C (108 deg F) where I am for the second day in a row, and still 30 something at midnight. Sleep was very hard!

Then today the cool change came through with rain. Does anything smell as good as rain on parched soil? We garden 2 acres, surrounded by 16 acres of bush, so we live for rain. The new year started with heaven!

Happy new year to all!

Lynne

And it waited until the Fall’s Festival was over. I know so many people who went it is hard to believe that it is an interstate event.

Not to derail all you Aussies, but it’s supposed to be 80 F in Dallas today. And that’s 2 weeks after the start of “winter.”

In the early 70s, the town of Lithgow, 100 miles west of Sydney, had a white Christmas.

80 F in Houston, too, and muggy as all heck.

Can we trade weather for a while? Here’s my 7-day forecast:

Feel free to copy and paste that list a few times if you want the forecast for the next couple of months.

Given our long running drought, I’d gladly trade weather with anyone who’s expecting constant rain for weeks on end.
