Landslide Elections

In reference to the Presidential Election Landslide question (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_135.html), didn’t Washington have the biggest landslide of all? I remember hearing in history that he was voted President by unanimously. Is there a special condition that eliminates the Gather of our Country but allows all others to be in the running?

Read the column more closely. It states that:

  1. prior to 1824, popular vote totals are unavailable. Since both Washington’s elections were prior to 1824, there is no way to compare how big a landslide he had.

  2. Washington got 100% of both electoral college votes. Thus it clearly states Washington is the winner on that count.

Remember also that most states did not appoint their presidential electors by popular vote until the mid-19th century or so.
