I’m Christmas shopping for my Grandma. She LOVES to read. I’d like to get as many books as I can afford.
They have to be large print. She’s 86. I’m thinking mostly fiction, but a very simple narrative-style nonfiction would be ok. She doesn’t care much for what I’d call literary fiction.
I’d love to get her Little House on the Prairie, but the large-print version is about a million dollars. Anyone have any suggestions for books about a similar time period in American history? She really likes stories about pioneers, too - any time when people really had to “rough it.”
Grandma doesn’t get around too well anymore, especially when it’s cold. She used to stay busy taking care of my disabled uncle, but he passed away this fall. It’s going to be a long winter for her. Thanks in advance for helping me keep her entertained!
How about paying someone to (every 2-3 weeks) peruse her local library offerings online with her (perhaps they could bring a laptop with them) make selections and then pick up/return them for her. Most of the books should be available in large print. If that’s still too pricy, maybe you could get other relatives to take turns footing the bill.
Check with her local public library and see if they have a special program for loans of large print books or audiobooks by mail. I had an elderly “aunt” (not a relative, but close enough that my daughter’s named for her) who was in a program in NJ where the library would mail her a large print book with a pre-paid return mailer - her cost was zero! I think the books were selected by phone, or by librarian’s choice. If your Grandma’s on line she can pick things out that way.
Librarians are very helpful people!
Also, Amazon has a good large print selection. I have no specific book suggestions, I’m sorry to say.
