This movie didn’t have its own thread yet, so I thought I’d start one.
We saw this movie this weekend and were delighted! I found it to be really funny, moving, sad, and joyful. But mostly funny.
The basic plot is (without giving too much away):
A sweet, but emotionally challenged/damaged/immature man buys himself a girlfriend – a lifesize (very ) realistic doll. He seems to believe that it is actually alive, and the rest of the small northern town go along with it for his sake.
I used this as an example to my immigrant wife of the “best” of small-town America – how we take care of our own.
I’m surprised there’s been no response. I put this movie as the best “small movie” of the year that I’ve seen. (And we see a lot of movies-- at least 100 a year.)
Has anyone else seen it, or am I the only one? I’d compare this movie to Death at a Funeral, which I really liked. I think “Lars…”, however, is even better than Death at a funeral.
Ok, ok, I’ll just sit here patiently while you go out and see it. Then we can talk about it. This is me on my sofa, twiddling my thumbs.
My husband and I saw it, and we loved it. It’s very sweet and funny. I think there must have been a lot of angsty scenes that explained more about why Lars was the way he was, but were left on the cutting room floor. I think that was a good choice, you just had to accept him the way he was, just as the townspeople accepted Bianca.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a gentle comedy.
I just saw this. I felt like I knew those people and that town. And I don’t think I’ve cried over a doll since the time my brother broke my barbie when I was like five, but man, I was all ablubber by the end.
In another thread I had mentioned how much we liked this film.
If you like those “quirky” British films like Waking Ned Devine and Calendar Girls, you will like this film.
