Last week I watched Once and it was so nice that I wanted to recommend it.
But that isn’t worth a thread by itself. The film is two years old and had a couple of short threads in Cafe Society, back when it was in theaters.
(It’s about an Irish street musician and his friendship with a young Czech girl. A “micro-budget” film that was shot in the streets with semi-hidden cameras, so that passer-bys often didn’t know they were in a film. In the commentary track the director frets over the very few lines and scenes that had the smallest taint of trite… and yet it ends up an exceedingly sweet movie.)
So here are some other things I’ve liked that have come in the mail recently:
Lars and the Real Girl,
Charlie Wilson’s War,
Let the Right One In (the Swedish movie about a vampire with an eight-year old’s body, done in naturalistic style… no scary music or cheap audience shock tricks)
Have you seen any good movies lately?
