Las Vegas judge gets attacked by defendant

He’s refusing to reappear in court.
(It’s not the video of the incident, Inside Edition is using that for the thumbnail)

Sometimes the guards will say a defendant refuses to appear in court, when in reality they just don’t want him to, perhaps because he’s a bloody mess. At least that’s what one of my clients told me when I asked him why he refused to attend his hearing.

I suppose that they could do a ‘Hannibal Lecter handcart’ thing…

Court security got caught snoozing.

It was surprising how quickly he went from pleading for leniency and probation to lunging over the judges bench.

That law clerk went Rambo on the guy. Somebody had to get him off the judge. They need to add MMA to Law School curriculum.

Glad she wasn’t badly hurt.

A&E has a series Court Cam. It’s disturbing how little respect defendants have for courtrooms. They say such outrageous things and even attack their own attorneys. I haven’t seen a judge attacked before.

This is a longer video that shows the guy asking for leniency because he’s reformed and all better now, and is no longer committing crimes … seconds before he attacks the judge:

Not a joke – based on my unscientific watching of Court Cam an obstreperous defendant who’s out of control despite handcuffs and leg shackles can be strapped down into a wheelchair to be brought into court, and can have a spit hood put over the head. Dunno if gagging is permitted, though. I’m pretty sure such restraints are more likely for court appearances that don’t involve a jury, though I would welcome correction by any actual attorneys.

I’n so glad I’m not the only one. As with sov cits I like it when these yahoos get tased and turn from “big and bad” into crying babies. Loved the vid from Australia where the public official being interviewed on television tackles a dude who is attempting to elude law enforcement officials. The guy on camera had been a rugby player and did he ever make a good catch.

There’s plenty of Court Cam videos where the judge was attacked. Not to the extreme in this case. They are generally handled pretty quick like. The attorneys getting attacked often fare less well, being so close in proximity.

Yeah, those SovCits are a joke. One judge flipped the script on the defendant and totally screwed him up. He was blubbering when they walked him out.

I’m sure some lawyer could spin the constitution in such a way that prohibiting a defendant from speaking in court violates his rights in some way.

Judges shut them off all the time if they’re in those enclosed booths. You see the defendant screaming and frothing at the mouth. Shaking their fists. Judge has em muted.
It’s hilarious.

Goddam namby-pamby ACLU lawyers insisting their clearly guilty clients be allowed to speak in their own trial!

You’re probably too young to remember Bobby Seale, who was bound and gagged by order of Judge Julius Hoffman during the Chicago 8 Trial (which became the Chicago 7 trial when Seale was removed from the case and tried separately). It was a jury trial. It was also something of a circus.

Watch some of the courtroom zoom calls. Same thing.

In the Law Talk with Mike video, a Nevada attorney Ben Bateman explained that the courtroom is on the third floor, and that floor it had originally been for the clerk’s office, but when they went to electronic filings, they had extra space that they turned into courtrooms. The judges’ benches in those courtrooms are lower than on the other floors.

That was so wrong in his case. He was requesting his attorney.

This was referenced in the Crosby Stills Nash & Young song Chicago:

Though your brother’s bound and gagged
And they’ve chained him to a chair
Won’t you please come to Chicago
Just to sing

Oh, actually, I am old enough to remember that – I just failed to. Probably creeping senility.

New footage released that shows how defendant got to the judge.

I’m seeing a story that the judge has ordered his reappearance in her courtroom for sentencing on Monday. Amusing as that prospect seems, how on earth can she not recuse herself?

Source is a local news TV report that’s on youtube. It also says he succeeded in slamming her head against the wall and ripping some of her hair out before he was restrained, and that marshals alerted by the panic alarm initially went to the wrong courtroom.

Looking at the latest video that running_coach just linked … that courtroom looks like a not-much-security traffic court around here.
