Watching it on CNN now. It looks like the fire is coming from at least two different areas. Any theories on how they started?
Anecdote - The two talking heads in the studio are so enwrapped with each other they are not looking at their live feed aboard the helicopter, nor listening to the reporter aboard. The onboard reporter is on camera and telling them the chopper has to leave the scene and return to base for refueling.
Now they are showing a taped earlier scene.
According to the local television news, the fire started on the roof of the building and there were some people working there at the time.
It looks like it is mostly under control at this time, with the smoke getting less and less, but still looks like it burned quite a bit on the top couple of floors. The fire on the west wing is totally contained and the fire on the east wing is almost contained.
No injuries reported at this time.
Guests have been evacuated to the MGM Grand Garden, but there are conflicting reports if even all of the guest have been evacutated.
That is the news at this time from the local television stations.
I just checked the Monte Carlo Hotel website, and though the “what’s new” section touches on on the imminent arrival of a steakhouse, it entirely fails to mention the pertinent information, “we are on fire”.
I think an email of complaint is in order.
Dammit! I just snorted coffee on my keyboard. Through my nose. Bastard. It’s far too early for jokes.
jjimm - I disagree. I just perused the website and it clearly said “Our nickel slots are HOT!”
And yes, it was just reported that people were still playing the slots while the fire was burning on the top floor and pretty much had to be dragged out.
Newest reports are that amazingly no real damage to any rooms, the fire was on the roof and outside of the building.
Oh, and I think they have already allowed people to get back in and play those machines again…I will bet the “Blazing Sevens” slot machines will be the big hits in the Monte Carlo for the next few weeks.
Firemen vs Fire.
Wanna bet who wins?
What are the odds?
The fire is out. A lot of blackened residue, though.
I clicked on this and got news on 4 avalanches in Wrightwood, CA…20 miles from my office.
That’s just the new steakhouse.
I wonder how long it took them to get the intercom to stop playing Buster Pointexter?
Me mind on fire – Me soul on fire – Feeling hot hot hot
Party people – All around me feeling hot hot hot
What to do - On a night like this
Music sweet - I can’t resist
We need a party song - A fundamental jam!
Probably some guy smoking a joint and caught the curtains on fire.
Why bother? They want to roll the dice, let 'em.
$10 says in a week you won’t be able to tell there was a fire at all. Bad for business, don’t you know.
In a just world, the fire would have taken out the dance club that replaced the brewpub.
My first thought:
The fire was a diversion for some kind of huge heist. Tonight, they’ll open up the vault and discover it’s completely empty. I hope they get someone hotter than Julia Roberts for the movie.
Sorry to come in on this a few days late–I was a guest at the Monte Carlo.
We were across the street at the MGM Grand when the fire trucks came by. I idly wondered where they were going. Then I noticed people on the sidewalk stopping, looking up, etc. So I walked to where I could see what they were seeing and was a little chagrined to see black smoke pouring off the roof of my hotel.
I immediately called our friends, who were in the hotel and had no idea. And didn’t necessarily believe me. So I sent a photo from my camera phone, which worked. They left about 5 minutes before the hotel formally evacuated everyone.
Anyway, it was quite the experience. They had a big center set up to deal with everyone; they had to put 3000 guests elsewhere, most of whom still had all their stuff up in their rooms. It was a PITA in some respects but all in all it was remarkable how they managed to get everyone squared away, ferried to other locations, and contacted to go back to the hotel to pack their stuff later that night. Made for an unforgettable vacation!
Actually, they were quite lucky (if you can call it that) in that all the smoke and fire damage is not visible from the strip. It was one of the back sides, not the strip facade.
Where did they put you up? Did you still have to pay for the room, or did they move you to another property for free? I guess it’s lucky it was a slow weekend. Had it been next weekend, someone might have been screwed.
They didn’t believe you when you told them they were about to be engulfed in fire?!!
Let’s hope they believe you if there’s a more imminent danger afoot. . . although fire is pretty imminent, if you ask me.
By the time you send a phone photo of a gator about to chomp their head, it might be too late!
