LAS VEGAS: My New Website

AmbushBug, just changed the name to South Coast…thanks for that eagle eye you have!

This is only a minor point, because it’s obviously a fun site.

The first thing Internet Explorer showed was the text “Scroll Down”. I read your intro and options before I realised there was a curtain.
Obviously first impressions count a lot when there is so much choice on the Web.

The site is very heavy on graphics, a no-no when creating a “normal” site, so perhaps it was a slow download on your end…but thanks for mentioning it…did the rest of the site show up at a “regular” speed? Also, do you have a dial-up connection or broadband? Just wondering as I have forwarded the site onto friends in Germany and I am sure they will have the same problems as you are having.

This is totally criticism from the unable and untalented, but that layout shouts “Geocities circa 1998”, to me. I like the idea, but it’s hard to concentrate with all that bling.

Cool concept and I liked it’s execution. Very interesting info on Las Vegas, especially your personal comments - useful as well as enjoyable to read. BTW, I’ve never been to Vegas (nor am I thinking of going … must fly to get there, after all :D), have never gambled at a casino (even though some are within a couple of hours of me in the east coast), but if I were going to Vegas, I’d want to look up a site like yours first.

Loved the varying showgirls, btw.

Just a couple thoughts. First at least 1/3rd of the screen area is taken up by the graphics. It may be better to keep the theme but resize it so that it doesn’t take up so much screen area. I imagine that reading the site on a 15 inch monitor would be a bit hard. Second, scrolling text against a static background is hard to read as Red Barchetta pointed out. Also, another personal pet peeve I have is scrollable text in a scrollable window. It makes trying to navigate with a mouse wheel hard, if you want to get to the top or bottom of a page you have to grab the scroll bar and drag it or srcoll with the mouse wheel like 10,000 times. If the text won’t fit on a single screen, put it on another page and pre-load it. It makes navigating easier.

The graphics are nice though a bit large. It’s got a good theme.

Naw, that long ago if you were on local Vegas BBS’s I’d most probably know you, Vegas being a much “smaller town” then. Heck, Art Bell (link, yeah this guy) operated a very popular one from about 1981-1987 or so. And it had nothing to do with aliens and conspiracy theories

Personally, I think it is a great design and since it is about Las Vegas, your presentation would probably rank as conservative and modest (by Vegas standards).

Just one small criticism, although people are saying your site is graphics intensive, I think it could use graphics in the text section. If nothing else, (for example) in the “casino” section, if you could insert small graphics of each casino (Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, etc), it would make the text a little more interesting to read. (Yes, graphics of “Bunny” in the “sex” section would also make for interesting reading).

Now for some more praise. I like the fact that you don’t use animated graphics. (I hate animated graphics).

I like the way the text fits very neatly inside those curtain borders. I’m sure we’ve all seen websites that have text running outside the borders; text running from one end of the monitor to the other; text that needs to be scrolled horizontally, etc.

You have kept the design simple as opposed to those websites that have about 8 columns that usually overlap and you can’t read a damned thing.

The scrolling is smooth. Don’t you hate websites that have scrolling so “rough” that it almost acts like a pdf document? ARRRRGGGGHH !!!

Basically, a darned good job.

Thanks…and if you want a candid, backstage view of the girls between acts, check out my 404 error page:

“It’s Vegas, baby…” and if you think this is bling, wait until you come here and see some of the old-school dudes hanging around the sports books…so much bling they have to hunch when they walk.
But point taken.

…tell me about it…I got a case of carpal tunnel just proofing the damned thing in various browsers over the past few weeks…using the down arrow button is a lot easier…

wolf_meister, you want MORE graphics? People using dial-up connections would be able to watch the entire LOTR trilogy in the time it took to download…although I do like the idea of a graphic of Bunny…hmm…might just work on that and create a secret link somewhere…let me mull that idea over.

Thanks for your comments, and consider yourself lucky I haven’t finished my FLASH class at UNLV or I might have been tempted to have those showgirls kicking up a storm…but I agree…animation has its place, but I think I have kitsched the site enough and don’t need any more.

I’m still on dialup. :o

The text loaded faster (and was a good read - I must visit Las Vegas sometime!)

Are they still filming CSI in Las Vegas? Perhaps you could add a section on TV programs set in Vegas…

Sorry to burst your bubble, but they have never filmed CSI in Las Vegas…well, for the most part…they do the occasional exterior shots here, but the entire CSI: Las Vegas is filmed in LA. Same goes for the TV series, “Las Vegas”…they started off shooting some scenes here, but for the most part - all shot in LA.

A bit of trivia…I temped with a women…she used to work for the local newspaper and she, and another guy, basically wrote up police reports for the newspaper. One day, her co-worker said, “ya know, all these stories would make a great TV show…” and she said, “yeah, right.”
He took his idea and did fairly well with it.
Her ex-co-worker now has millions of dollars - he is one of the producers of CSI. Trust me, she is still bitter about not joining in his enthusiasm for the idea.

And thanks for letting me know that the site works on dial-up connections, and glad you liked the info.
