LASIK

Has anyone ever heard of the Pyramid Eye Institute in NYC? If so, what have you heard about them?
I was considering going there to get The Lasik procedure done, but I’m not to sure.
Compared to all the other facilities that do the Lasik procedure, the have the cheapest prices. I wouldn’t be so concerned if it was a few hundred less, but I’m talking about 1800 dollars cheaper per eye. Does that sound strange?

My wife had it done at one of the more expensive places - I’ve blocked the painful memory of how much it cost out. It would help if you told us how much they are charging per eye - not just the discount.

Ive never heard of them.

It seems to me that lasic is done by computer/laser - if they all have the same computer/laser the results should be the same - maybe they are using older equipment maybe not.

I saw the whole thing on video and the Dr has very little to do w/ it (IMHO - maybe a dr can jump in here).

Also the newest equipment will track the eye movments and ajust - my wife had hers before that was available.

The results were 20/20 in one and 15/20 in the other. Occational (really rare) halo effect (a possibility w/ lasic). Her nightvision was never the best but it didn’t really effect it much except what she does see she can see better.

Things they don’t tell you till they dope you up on valumn 1 hr before lasic (1st they don’t give you the dope early enough - go early and ask for it sooner) that you have a long recovery time - you have to sleep w/ protective lenses for about a week, wear dark glasses etc.

whould she do it again if she had it to do over - no question.

Some places do not use FDA approved lasers. Be sure that the machine they use is FDA approved. I’ve read about some horrow stories of outfits that do it cheap, but they use cheap machines that are not approved. A FDA approved laser costs almost a million dollars.

If you are considering LASIK, check out this site. It provides a list of 50 questions, plus the correct answers, to ask before agreeing to have the procedure performed. Very good background information.

Don’t forget, this is your eyesite, don’t be afraid to ask tough questions!

The site you reference is my eyesite?

We may need to cite you for your oversight.

Let me take an OJ stab at this but ‘lasik’ is a pretty unique word, so drop it in the search box on this site & bring up one of the old topics. There is a lot of discussion on it.

If you see really cheap LASIK surgery offered (like $499 per eye) is that this rate only applies if your eyes are already pretty close to 20/20. Any even slight short sightedness or astigmatism will put the price back to normal levels. Read the small print. Less than 5% of eyes will qualify, but $499 gets folks through the door.

General price for it in St. Louis is 1000 per eye, regardless of your vision. I know a lot of people who have done it and love it. I would like to get it done, but call me old fashioned, I just can’t bring myself to have a machine use lasers to melt my eyes. Glasses suck and contacts are a pain, but for now, I’ll just stick with them.

I had my eyes done by Lasik Vision in Vancouver, BC, Canada. They’ve since broken up into separate offices.

I’m from Seattle, WA, so it was just a short trip over the boarder. Both eyes were greater than 20/400, and I had a level 2 astigmatism in my left eye. I now have 20/15 vision in both eyes and no asitigmatism. The cost for both eyes: $1000 US. The total cost for the trip, around $1400 US.

I have had no problems with my eyes, and my night vision is quite good. So I don’t think going on the cheap necessarily means getting poor service. But I went with what was considered a better organization at the time. It may be harder to find a reputable company now.

And you can still see?

First of all, even though the computer/laser is what does the actual correcting, I think the doctor has a lot to do with it. Who do you think is setting the laser in the right position over your body? And yes, there is a lot that the doctor can do to help or hinder the actual surgery. Plus if they are charging less, they are probably using older equipment. Ask those questions…

I had the surgery done in March of 2001. Very successfully.

Secondly, as far as the “long recovery time”… I don’t know when the previous poster’s wife had this done, but when I had mine done, it wasn’t near that long. I had to wear dark shades home and then sleep for a few hours wearing the protective lenses (not even over night). The next day I was back to normal, other than the drops that they give you (steroids to promote faster healing and antibiotics to prevent infection).

I would however strongly suggest getting the valium. I chose not to because I wasn’t really nervous about it, but once you’re in the chair and you can “see” them doing the surgery, it was a bit trippy. Also, your eyes will feel weird when you try to rest at home afterwards, and the valium will help you relax and get the rest you’re supposed to get.

As an extra note, I had my surgery done on a Wednesday or Thursday and then I took the rest of the week off work as well (because I work on a computer all day and wanted to give my eyes the extra rest). That was the smartest thing I did, as the Monday I went back to work I could feel the strain a little bit.

But I would do it over again in a heart beat. I wore glasses for over 17 years and fought with contacts for a good portion of that time (I have/had GPC problems). To be able to see clearly when I get out of the shower, wake up in the morning, am swimming etc etc etc, is the most awesome thing!

No thread about LASIK would be complete without a link to the thread containing my blow-by-blow account of the surgical procedure. Scroll down to the August 20, 2000 post, and enjoy!

Gettin’ my eyes lasered…

Has anyone in the UK had this done? Know how much it costs, what’s a reputable place, etc?
