After two years, I’m finally leaving my job. I got a much better one down in Tallahasse.
In my two years here, I’ve seen many people come and go. Most, when they leave, get a card signed by as many people as can cram their names on it. Some even have a collection taken up for them, coming to as much as $200.
Me? I get bagels.
On the one hand, I didn’t want anything big done for me.
oh man, that’s shitty. Here, have a card from me (seriously, post your address, I’ll send one along )
anyhow.
to try and ease your pain:
A woman I know who worked for a company for 22 years recently retired. She was the 3rd person of recent memory to retire. the other two had big parties in the evening at a local Athletic club (swank place, reallY). The schedule for HER party was: 1:00 -2 pm groundbreaking ceremony under the tent for new building. 2- 3 pm Ginnie’s Party (under the same tent), 3 pm board meeting (elsewhere so most had to leave like 245 at the latest).
Who’d you piss off? The person in charge of cards and collections maybe?
I could never understand collecting money – most people are going on to something better, or retirement. And if they need money, maybe they shouldn’t be leaving. ???
I’m sorry you’re feeling left out though. Maybe the thing to do is make sure it doesn’t happen to someone else, in your new job.
Wow, bummer. At my company the secretaries usually arrange all of the going away stuff, so if it is like that at yours, they blew it.
Well, here is my sig for your card

It was really nice working with you.
Good luck in your new endeavors.
I loved those e-mail jokes you sent.
Take care.

As you go through life, there are an enormous number of parties.
They will seldom be for you. It’s just the odds.
The last office party you were at- how many people were there? A lot. How many parties were there this year? Not many. Not anywhere near the number of people who left.
The difference is that you think parties are parceled out evenly, like they were in childhood, where everyone got one birthday cake a year.
For adults, a party means either you have a special friend throwing it or the office machinery is ready for another. That’s no longer an even proposition, but actually long odds.
So enjoy the bagels, and good luck at your new job!
