Cracks up, that is. I’ve always admired the “reporters” on The Daily Show for being able to keep a straight face. But last night, Steven Colbert got the giggles during a sketch where he was reporting from London on the Prince Charles thing, but wasn’t allowed to talk about it. He had to stop a couple of times to regain his composure.
Jon Stewart was starting to lose it too, and it began to remind me of the sketches on the old Carol Burnett show where Harvey Korman would start to laugh at Tim Conway and then neither could keep a straight face.
Did anyone else catch the show last night? What did you think?
I saw it. I thought it was funny and that they didn’t need to re do it since it never (rarely) happens on the show anyway. It was a nice change up I thought.
Colbert is hysterical. So is Jon Stewart. So is Lewis Black…Man I love the Daily Show.
I guess the breakup was funnier than what had actually been written, so they left it in (although they probably did reshoot it).
I’ve seen Colbert live three times, once at the Museum of TV and Radio SWC seminar and twice at WIGFIELD readings. He’s fantastic, very bright and charming and a really fabulous actor. And cuuuuute! Although sometimes after TDS it’s jarring to see him on a commercial and realize that they’re all really actors (to be fair, the correspondents are pretty intelligent and informed and the writers work closely with them to tailor the spots. Except maybe for that Samantha Bee. Yawn.)
I’d imagine that Colbert has cracked up before and they’d just reshoot the bit. This time, they decided to leave it be, because it can be fun for the audience to watch.
Colbert is very good at keeping composure. You can sometimes see that he could crack up, but he keeps it reigned in. Colbert’s humor is usually very intellectual, but doing the physical comedy of deep throating a banana was too much I guess.
I almost didn’t watch TV yesterday because my roommate was studying, but I decided I needed a good dose of The Daily Show. Am I glad I did. It distracted her and we both laughed the entire time. Great stuff.
[hijack]The Mr Goodwrench commercial is good stuff. “Doesn’t leave much time for Mrs Goodwrench, now does it?”[/hijack]
My husband and I almost woke the kids up laughing at that. As soon as he pulled out the banana, I knew he wasn’t going to make it through with a straight face.
Saw this last night. Freakin’ howled. I was crying by the end of it. I’m glad they don’t do it very often (Jon occasionally restrains a smirk), and I hope they don’t feel like this gives them permission to do it a lot more, but this one time was priceless.
I happened to turn on Comedy Central tonight at 7 and caught this bit. My husband and I just looked at each other and lost it! Too too too funny! I love The Daily Show!
That thing was very funny, although the strangest thing was the unexplained phenomena of Mr. T bashing Best Buy for using his image without his permission while wearing a shirt with the Best Buy logo on it.
It was great. Plus, it proves that a rare genuine crackup can be comedy gold, but shown too often (like Fallon and Sanz on SNL, especially since it feels forced when they do it) it gets old quick.
I thought that the cue in the “walking around at work” shot was intentional, too, just like the Best Buy shirt.
This was the first episode of the Daily Show that I’d seen in ages. I’d forgotten that it was brilliant and funny and made me hurt myself laughing. I shall not forget again.
The look on stephen’s face as he tried not to spew banana all over himself is forever ethched in my mind. Comedy gold. The man needs an Emmy. Like yesterday.
