By the title, I mean some “prominent” person who may have known the lady.
This of course has no bearing on anything- I was watching a doco tonight and wondered who could have had some sort of knowledge of her.
Winston Churchill was the one who came to mind. However, as he didn’t become a member of Parliament until 1900 it is possible he never met her and probably didn’t know her. There were the children of Edward the VII, but even Edward VII wasn’t born until 1894 (I think) and would have been a child when she died.
So perhaps Lloyd-George- even Kaiser Wilhelm (although he passed away before Lloyd-George).
Her granddaughter Princess Alice is probably a good candidate. She was born in 1883, which would have made her 17 or so when Victoria died, and died in 1981, 80 years after the Queen.
There is also her great-grandson, Prince Wolfgang, who Wikipedia has the longest-living descendant born in her lifetime. He would’ve been 6 or so when she died, and he himself died in 1989. I don’t know how well he would have known knew her though.
The last person who knew her probably died long ago, given that she didn’t like children. She may have been bipolar, judging by her behavior to her husband, and demanded absolute silence in her home. Child relatives were brought in to pay homage and be evaluated, and for photo ops, but otherwise weren’t welcome.
That’s not true, exactly. She didn’t like infants or childbirth and she wasn’t very motherly, but she was very family oriented, and she was a very beloved figure among her grandchildren. It’s suggested that she was going through menopause when Albert died, and she seemed to have suffered from post-partum depression throughout her life.
Also, the Kaiser, her oldest grandchild, died in 1941, but was outlived by two of Victoria’s own children: his uncle Arthur, the Duke of Connaught (1942) and his aunt Beatrice of Battenberg (1944). Beatrice was the youngest of Victoria’s children.
Queen Victoria seemed to like her daughters- well far more than Edward VII. However, he didn’t help that by shagging some floozie when he was quite young and having Victoeria find out about it.
(BTW I realise there was an error in my OP. It was Edward VIII, not VII who was born in 1894).
A strong possibility must be Lady Victoria Wemyss, as she was one of Victoria’s godchildren, was not a mere infant when Victoria died and yet did not herself die until 1994.
And yeah, she was closest with her eldest daughter, also named Victoria. But she also favored the Duke of Connaught. She was very controlling as a parent. The reason she didn’t get along with her eldest son is that he reminded her too much of her side of the family, whereas Vicky was more like Albert’s. They put too much pressure on the Prince of Wales, so naturally he never lived up to expectations.
