"Last Resort" season thread

I enjoyed it. It’a currently available on Verizon FIOS On Demand and is being rebroadcast again tonight at 9:01 pm eastern time on ABC.

So the old broadcast networks have finally caught on to the idea of rebroadcasting? I hope it’s a trend. Cable stations give you a number of opportunities to catch most shows.

I really enjoyed the pilot… but I’m damned if I can see how they can possibly keep the somewhat implausible conceit going. Basically everyone in the sub crew who has family or friends back in the US would be constantly trying to get the situation resolved, not just settling into this weird new normalcy. And it’s hard to imagine that whatever conspiracy is going on back in the US isn’t going to get upended pretty quickly now that the captain’s video has been made public.

That’s pretty much my thinking. Is every week going to be some new failed attempt to destroy them and their sub? How long can that go on? Sort of an inverse Gilligan’s Island - with nukes!

Well, plus the implication is that whatever mission the SEALS were on before the show started is somehow related, but they’ll remain either tight-lipped or incoherent about it, which will get annoying awfully quick.

I plan on watching it at least until it gets too far fetched. I found it funny that they had the stealth bombers making a daylight run on the sub. They fly when it’s dark.
Taking out a nuclear sub parked in a lagoon would’t be much of a problem for another sub. Now, if it was under the polar ice cap it might be a problem. But then, guessing who the bad guys are will be fun.

Maybe they’ll somehow figure out what illegal mission the Seals were on and hold that over Washington’s (or whoever’s really in charge of the military now) head. They’d have to be working with someone not on the island otherwise nuking them would stop them from talking. Maybe the woman who invented whatever the hell device is on that sub?

It seems like it would have to be something like that. They can’t just have them repeatedly fending off physical attacks. Well, they could, but it’d get old fast.

On the other hand, making it some kind of psychological thriller where they’re threatening their potential attackers with exposure would make it a different show from what the audience is expecting, so that might not work either.

I’m hoping that the writer’s will surprise us by taking it in some unexpected direction that can be sustained for many episodes, but I’m not optimistic.

Actually, the incoming bombers were unstealthy B1s, not B2s.

When the B2s eventually do come in… heck, I dunno if the sub would even detect them. The bluff will have to be that the missile station is manned 24 hours a day, ready to launch multiple nukes on a moment’s notice.

Actually, they probably should take it out in the deep ocean and stay underwater. They could use boats or rafts to change shifts and bring supplies. If a shift doesn’t show, launch the nukes.

I enjoyed the first half hour in the sub, it was super-intense. The whole order to launch vs Hannah Montana and the weather man on tv was very well done. Tensions in the crew, with the SEALS and some of the regular crew seeming to know what was going on while the captain did not. Confusion, treason, miscommunication, lies = excellent.

Then they surfaced on Paradise Island and it quickly got ludicrous. Pointless confrontation between SEAL guy drinking beer and Island gang leader. Dude, you just invaded their island. Maybe try to be more diplomatic since you’ll need their cooperation. Convenient NATO listening post. Actually couldn’t the bad guys, the ones trying to start WWIII, have taken that off-line at the same time they sent out the bombers?

I am also wondering what direction this show will take. I just hope it doesn’t feature many heavy-handed islander vs military confrontations because the real intrigue is maneuvering in DC.

Sorry, I couldn’t not post about how much this reminded me of Romney talking about Michigan. :D:p

It had some issues, but it also had a lot of promise. Plus, I’d watch at least three episodes of “Andre Braugher Reads the Phone Book and Watches Paint Dry”

The arms executive/scientist/inventor didn’t really make sense; there was no reason for intentional mystery with that character’s super secret equipment. And the SEAL/regular navy conflict didn’t really work (especially when it didn’t pop back up the second they were out of danger). And I’m not sure about the casting for Lt. Bitch. And I think they tried to overstuff the pilot. But if they learn how to better balance the incredibly sprawling ensemble, this might be one of the scheduling hours that finally spurs me to getting a four tuner TiVo.

That whole bit with the picking up of the Navy seals was just a millitary exercise wasn’t it?

I didn’t see it as an actual combat situation.

No, it was an actual situation. One of the SEALs is dead and another is wounded. The captain mentions to the SEALs that the sub is on its way to a military exercise (apparently to test out its new stealth device).

…Did most people just half watch this? I feel like a lot of the questions were things that were pretty obvious.

I liked it! The first new show this season that wasn’t a dud. Ok, I kind of did a few  with everyone being right out of Vogue or GQ, but there was good acting, good writing, and a set-up for some good future action. You just knew that Navy SEAL guy and native girl were going to hook up, but that’s OK.

I give it a solid B. Lets hope it doesn’t devolve into another Terra Nova or Revolution.

Not only was it an actual SEAL mission, but it was strongly implied that it was either an illegal mission, or one that went wrong in some unspecified way.

Also, after the attack on the Colorado, somebody did nuke somewhere…I think it was Pakistan. They showed two missiles inbound on the NATO screen, then showed them detonate…but nothing else was mentioned about it…

Don’t know any SEALS do you?
Personally I loved that scene.

Felt too rushed, like there should’ve been at least a 2 hour pilot, or that level of material should’ve probably covered the first 3-4 episodes. Especially in the second part of the episode, things happened so fast. Launching the nuke at the coast line was extremely sudden - no drama, no potential conflict within the sub crew over such a thing, just an out of the blue launch order and matter of fact quick resolution.

They should’ve saved the island for episode 3-4 and had them running around trying to escape and just keep the damage ship intact, having the crew try to cope with the bizarreness of the new situation they’re under, having arguments over what to do, attempts to contact people in the outside world, etc.

Otherwise I liked it. It’s just so strange that with a show like this, where it seems like they’d be hurting for material pretty quickly, they’d rush to cram in a few episodes of material into one.

No, I think they are going to try to cover too much material and that might be the problem.
They have the main problem of forcing all governments to stay away, using their nuclear warheads at leverage, but having to keep vigilant.
They have a professional team of SEALS trying to undermine them.
They have a member of the crew trying to start a mutiny.
They have a local gangster and thugs who will be a pain in the ass.
They have local flavor and love interests looming on the horizon.
Political daddy and his daughter will be another subplot.

No, I think the biggest problem is going to try to keep all of these storylines running at the same time, along with flashbacks and minor subplots and - well, this started off great and all, but I see this turning into a soap opera, confused “Lost” and whole bunches of other stories that might possibly get too tedious to follow.

We’ll see what happens, but I won’t be surprised if people start tuning out because the stories are going off in 12 different directions at the same time.
