"Last Resort" season thread

It looks interesting.

Thanks for the reminder. Although I haven’t paid attention to the promos so I don’t know what it’s about, except vaguely military. Andre Braugher is in it and he gets a permanent pass for Homicide.

DH thought it was worth checking out. I’ll probably watch with him out of curiosity, but I suspect it’ll be more interesting to him than to me.

I’m going to DVR it. It’s on at the same time as The Big Bang Theory season debut and football, so I’ll watch it later.

Big Bang Theory is debuting? Damn. I didn’t know.

I’m TIVOing Last resort. I think BBT will be on On Demand. At least I hope so.

I’ll probably watch. It’s from Shawn Ryan, and I’m a big fan of The Shield, so I’ve got to at least check it out.

Not planning to watch it. The concept just seems more suited to a movie or mini-series than a long running show. I don’t see how they could keep it up for more than a season without going to some weird unrealistic place with it. I think I’ve been burned a few times too many. If it turns out to be good, however long it lasts, I’ll catch it on DVD.

As long as it shows up on Hulu. Scott Speedman, Autumn Reeser, and Robert Patrick. Yeah.

I saw it. It’s a bit of a stretch, but interesting enough.

One question, though:

What country owns this island? India? Indonesia? Surely somebody is going to object to its territory being claimed in this manner.

I’ve got it set to record. I’m not excited about the premise, but I love Andre Braugher.

Watched it and thought it might have promise.

Have to see what happens next week before any judgements.

I missed the first half hour. Does ABC repeat its shows like NBC does? I don’t have a DVR.

I liked what I saw. There are some really hot guys, none of whom are familiar to me. (I like not associating actors with other roles.) The women are hot too, but not too hot, meaning they’re the kind of hot you see in everyday life. Well, not where I live, but where you guys probably live. And you can tell them apart – not the men from the women, but the men from the men and the women from the women.

I would have liked to see how they got from the sub to the island, without the standard (I assume) docking system. How would they have done that?

They likely used the rubber boats with outboard motors. Think they showed them doing that briefly. We know they have at least one, because in the beginning, they recovered a SEAL team that used it to make a rendezvous with the sub.

I saw enough to make me want to watch next week. It’s not great, but shows some promise.

I missed the first 5 minutes or so. Why were there Seals on board? Was the guy getting drunk a Seal? Also, who were the two people being taken away in the van by the “guy who used to run the island”?

In the very first scene, the SEALs were on the water, fleeing from some unexplained conflict, and the sub was directed to pick them up.

Yes.

Those were the two members of the submarine crew who were noted as missing when the whole crew scrambled back to the sub when the bombers were on the way. Presumably, the guy who used to run the island took them captive so he would have some leverage against the Captain.

I tried watching it but was getting dinner finished up and had some other distractions, so I missed big chunks here and there and had trouble following the plot. I liked what I saw though, and hope they rerun it or I can find it on demand so I can watch all the way through, because I did not DVR it.

And yeah, I’ve been a fan of Andre Braugher since Homicide. I’d watch him read a phone book.

This strikes me as a potential weak point. The Captain’s most likely response is to just shoot these guys, since he’s effectively put the island under martial law anyway. I don’t see this local crook being more than a minor speedbump compared to the larger conflict - his best bet would probably have been to offer to smuggle in food and supplies for the sub (and sneaking out information about it to whoever will pay for it), rather than get into some kind of pissing contest he can’t possibly win.

Meantime, the captain ties in his sub’s reactors to the local power grid and endears himself to the locals by giving them free electricity.

I loved it!

I liked it. Far-fetched but fun.

Some questions.

Would the water really be deep enough that close to the island for a missile carrying nuclear submarine?

Won’t the US, or whoever’s currently controlling their military, just nuke the island? What choice do the have? They’ve already had one nuke fly over the US and detonate off of the east coast.

I guess the idea is that the NATO equipment would see any incoming missile and the sub could retaliate before it hits. Could that equipment see a stealth bomber? What about a missile launched from a sub a few miles offshore? Could they be aware of it quickly enough to retaliate?

Aw, come on. It’s Hollywood. No need to get technical as Hollywood and the media are prone to do. The island’s NATO equipment would not detect another SEAL team sent in to destroy the sub. I liked the show but I doubt it will last a full season. Hollywood writers too often miss the practical sense of it all, hoping the bangs and bombs will keep people watching.

At least Andre Braugher has a better gig this time than selling cars.
