Firefly is a fun show. My favorite thing about it in fact is that it’s only 13 episodes long - I hate watching long-running shows, to be honest.
It would help, but it isn’t necessary. If you decide to watch Season One, you can get away with just Welcome to the Hellmouth/Harvest, The Pack, Angel, and Prophecy Girl.
Heck, don’t bother with “The Pack”. In other words, watch the first two episodes (a two-parter), the last episode, and one in the middle.
I had to include The Pack because it has my single favorite Giles quote ever:
Giles: Xander’s taken to teasing the less fortunate?
Buffy: Uh-huh.
Giles: And, uh, there’s a noticeable change in both clothing and demeanor?
Buffy: Yes.
Giles: And, well, otherwise, all his spare time’s spent lounging about with imbeciles?
Buffy: It’s bad, isn’t it?
Giles: It’s devastating. He’s turned into a sixteen-year-old boy. Of course, you’ll have to kill him.
