Started watching the show a few weeks ago via Netflix (the flow interrupted by a vacation and the release of the third “Man Men” season) and am waiting for the final disk. I now kick myself for not watching the show while it was on. The movie “Serenity” is pretty close to the top of my queue.
It’s nice to see that some of the actors have found prominent post-“Firefly” roles: Nathan Fillion on “Castle,” Morena Baccarin on “V,” Adam Baldwin on "Chuck,"and I heard Christina Hendricks found a job somewhere.
Are the graphic novels worth reading? Any other stories (books, fan fiction, etc.) set in that universe that I should check out? (I’m not much of a gamer so I won’t try that unless it’s super-amazing and available on Wii.)
Just in case you didn’t know both Firefly and Serenity are available by instant streaming as well so you don’t have to wait for the disk if you don’t want to.
Don’t worry about it. I love the stuff, but sometimes there is so much love that oozes from the board towards Firefly et al that it skews other people’s expectations. Hopefully, you won’t regret watching it. It should at least serve as entertaining fluff.
Episode six “Our Mrs Reynolds” is where it starts to get really good and several episodes after that are pure gold. The first five episodes are hit and miss but six to ten are the best ones IMO. So don’t give up on it until you watch episode six at least.
Edit: Dollhouse is exactly the same. Hit and miss first five, awesome sixth episode. It takes Joss a few to hit his stride.
Best to give it a chance. I definitely fell in the ‘meh’ category during my first watching, and made it barely past the pilot (which isn’t great, IMO). On the second try, I guess the planets were properly aligned or something because I really loved it, and made it through the whole series and the movie in about 3 sittings.
I definitely got a bit of a ‘trying to hard’ vibe from Serenity. The series is one of, nay, is my favorite series ever to be extruded by TV. Also, I’m in love with River and would stalk her if I wasn’t expecting a call right now. Wasn’t there something wrong with Kaylee’s face? Was she a bit cross eyed, maybe?
The only thing unusual about Kaylee’s face was that she somehow managed to fit a meter-wide smile onto a normal-sized human head. And that’s the opposite of something wrong.
Yes and River has prominent roles on Terminator and Dollhouse, and Kaylee was on Stargate Atlantis.
As far as graphic novels, there’s one that bridges the gap between the series and the movie, and there’s one coming up in the future that will reveal the secret backstory of Book. There’s others, but those two strike me as being noteworthy.
The movie is pretty awesome, both as a series ender and as a movie in it’s own right.
I agree it got better near the end. What could have been?
On the other hand, it made me a fan of Nathan Fillion (Castle is one of my fav shows), Jewel Staite (She made SG-Atlantis better) :)and Christina Hendricks (I’m at a lost for words…still nothing…I need some water) . ;)
