So, I was doing a vanity search :o and I realised I had abandoned this old thread - I must have missed it during the holidays. So, rather than bump it, I’ll start this one.
I was asked by twickster how I did in the contest - second place. In which I won: nothing.
My husband’s grandmother won by quite a bit - her plant was 3 feet tall, with another new stalk growing along beside it. Sheesh. The prize was a beautiful little “prayer plant”. Grandma insists she did nothing more than set it in the kitchen window and watered it only when dry, while her kids grumbled about her using special miracle plant potions, or eye of newt. The others in the contest had overwatered their plants, or didn’t give it enough light, or heat. Though their amaryllis didn’t die, they were very small.
Despite not winning, however, I am still very pleased with my very first amaryllis.
Here it is on Christmas Day (that’s hubby measuring for the contest), and here it is the day after Christmas. (yes, that’s the infamous Super Pickle in the background, chilling on the computer monitor). I’ll bet we would have gotten bonus points for a bloom!
We got six full, huge, beautiful blooms out of this plant, over time. All but one of the blooms have since withered and been plucked off, and I’m about ready to send it into “hibernation” for a while. I’ll be repotting it into a good clay pot this weekend, with better soil.
So, yay! Now I have a pretty amaryllis plant for next year, and maybe someday when we move into a house, I’ll plant it outside.
