Lawn care in Chicago - Grubs

Last year my lawn was infested with white grubs. This attracted raccoons to my yard and they tore it up terribly to get at the grubs. I don’t want that to happen again so I plan to use Grubex this year. When is the best time to apply it? And is it harmful to flowers or vegetables?
I could also use some advice on weed control.

Okay…get yee to a garden or home center and buy ‘pre-emergent lawn food’ right now and apply ASAP. This will stop crabgrass and weeds that haven’t sprouted yet. Kick starts the lawn, too, which is 80% of the battle against weeds: strong grass.

Have weeds already? Do the above AND buy liquid weed killer that connects to your garden house.

In June-ish, you will buy another bag of '‘lawn food with insect control’ and you will buy Grubex around the same time and apply it.

Thanks Philster. I’ll go to Home Depot this weekend and get started.

Not sure if we’re talking about the same thing but…

When I lived in El Paso, we had to water our lawns constantly (big surprise). June bugs lay their eggs in the grass, which then eat the roots and you end up with patches all over the place. A lawn guy told me to buy some really cheap laundry detergent, e.g. at Home Despot, and sprinkle it on the grass in the spring. When it rains, it dissolves and gets into the roots. It will kill the grubs…and turn your grass brown for awhile. But then it comes back green and strong.
