I have an HP vs15 Flat Screen LCD Monitor. Screen refresh rate is 75 Hertz. The DPI setting is 96 and I am wondering if resetting it to 120 (only other choice) will make the screen clarity any better. I am just wondering what effect changing the DPI to 120 would have on my screen. Right now, I see tiny little squares on the screen. My old CRT was much clearer than this Flat LCD Monitor. I am using Windows XP Prof SP2.

Change it.

See what happens.
Where is this DPI setting? If it’s the one found in Desktop Properties, Settings, Advanced, then all it does is increase the size of fonts and some icons. It doesn’t affect the resolution of your monitor (which is ultimately set by the number of pixels it has), and you will always be able to see the individual pixels unless you sit further away.
There is a way to make the fonts appear smoother, but I can’t remember what the setting is. I have my laptop with this font setting on and it takes away the jagged edges on fonts, kind of like anti-aliasing.
Right click the desktop, and select properties*, appearance, effects, then click the box that says “use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts” and select “clear type” from the drop down menu, you should find the fonts look nicer.
*I said “display” in my first post, I meant “properties”.
Er, I actually didn’t did I?
First things first. Find out what the LCD’s native resolution is, and set Windows to use that. Any other setting is guaranteed to give you fuzzy, blocky images.
Your monitor’s native resolution is 1024x768, and you can run it at 60 Hz, rather than 75 Hz. (Refresh doesn’t make much, if any difference, with LCD panels.)
Thanks gotpasswords, I have changed the 75Hz back to 60Hz and I can see that it is a little “clearer” but not much difference. As for the 96DPI, I think I will leave it at that and just go with the native resolution. I like the LCD monitor, but I did like my CRT more because the resolution was excellent. I think the LCD clarity is not as good because of the tiny little squares are so visible.
I am already using clear type and it does make a difference.
