Go for a 1080p. It will be ready for the future and be better than a Plasma.
They also use on average half the electricity. Save yourself some money in the long run and help the environment a little while you are at it.
If you want a good bargain, look at the Refurbish Vizio’s at a place like TigerDirect.com . Here is a sample listing.
It comes down to what size do you want and what do you want to spend, but go LCD over Plasma. They are better.

Any truth to the rumor that plasma TVs are being phased out?
1080p is a resolution. Both LCD and plasma are available in 1080p.

Oh yeah, someone said that if an LCD bulb burns out, that it costs a lot to replace, but I personally don’t know of anyone having this problem.
LCD flat panels don’t use bulbs. LCD projection sets do. Bulbs run around $200.

Have you looked at DLP? Pretty much the best of both worlds. No burn-in, true black, can be viewed from any angle, and I think the price is between LCD and plasma.
DLP is another form similar to an LCD projection. Neither are flat panels that can be hung but price is a big advantage.
