LDS Eagle Scout Candidate caught streaking in far N. Houston Subdiv on Flag Day!

As you can see, it’s already been a busy day. HubbySthrnAccent was called into work at 3 a.m. He left about 5 a.m. I put on a load of wash, unloaded the dishwasher, turned on the lights and computer in the home office, checked E-mail and last nights messages and started some eggs for breakfast before waking the two teenagers. We left the house at a few before 6 and were loading up our flags by five after.

The only fund raiser this troop does is a flag service. For a set donation of $20.00 they come out and put up a 5 x 8 foot flag in front of your home before 7 a.m. and pick them up after 7 p.m. on four flag days. (Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independance Day and Labor Day, a series of flags are set out at the entrance of the subdivisions, but not at the homes on Veteran’s Day. Also last year they put up the flags extra after the events of September 11th. Anyway, I digress…) Normally I don’t do this little run, it’s a father son activity. However, since Daddy was called into work, Mom is duly volunteered to be the driver. Oops digressing again…

The tube the flag pole goes in has a cap and it’s not easily visible. Generally the location is supposed to be marked with a small white star painted on the curb. They are on an angle 18 inches from the mailbox and 18 inches from the curb. It takes longer to find the tube and pop the cap with a screwdriver than it does to unroll the flag and post it. The route my son has is in a subdivision that 10 or 15 minutes from our home. The first three houses there were two stars for each house. There was fire ants at *1234 Any Street (*Name changed to protect the fireant farmers.) They were right in the tube that the flag goes in, and you have to take the cap off the tube to get the flag in. The teenager in question of course was determined to do his duty and ended up with fire ants on his hands and feet. He was frantic. His shoes went flying then his socks and shirt and he was grabbing at his shorts!

Oh my can you imagine the headlines?
**LDS Eagle Scout Candidate caught streaking in far North Houston Subdivision on Flag Day! **

I start brushing ants of and push him towards the minivan thinking maybe I can shove him in before he’s totally naked in the middle of the street.

The good news is that we didn’t get arrested for indecent exposure. The bad news is that we both have fire ant bites.

I dropped him off at swim team pratice by 7:15 a.m.

How’s your morning going?

I was awakened by the Man-Cub[sym]Ô[/sym] at 6:10am. I took him with me to the AnyTown USA Bagel Store ( name changed to protect Cartooniverse…:D.) He needed a dozen bagels to take in for his Symphonic Band end of year breakfast party. Got bagels, took out bagel slicer, sliced bagels.

Because I am very aware of people’s tastes vis a vis bagels, I’d taken a brown bag- lunchbag size- and used it to separate the Everything Bagels from the sesame and plain bagels. The Wifestrocity took the Man-Cub to school early.

I let the Fem-Bot[sym]Ô[/sym] sleep in since she’d played her little heart out last night at her end of year concert. I edited some digital photos that I’d taken recently, sent a few off to my best friend of some lovely flowers we have in the back yard, and awakened the Fem-Bot just in time for her to go to school.

Then I watched as I walked into the kitchen, and found her standing with a 20 oz. bottle of Vanilla Coke in her hands, wearing on her gorgeous 10-year-old face the very living breathing image of the child who was caught with her hand in the cookie jar. I sternly reminded her that Vanilla Coke wasn’t really proper breakfast food, and she could take it with her to school as a special treat. ( I don’t let my kids have caffeine after about 3 pm, they will be climbing the walls at 11pm…).

She took her science project that is now going in 3 days late, and put it into her jacket pocket. She created a creature that is half shark, half tiger. Needless to say, she named it a Tiger Shark.

I dropped her off at her school, and ran over to the babysitters. This September will be 10 years that the kids have been going there, and even though we’re probably going to Latch-Key the kids this year, we will still be very close to them, they’re family at this point. They asked me to hang around because they were about to interview a new potential client and wanted me, the oldest client they have to be there to say my mind. I had to peel, and so told them to give the lady my number.

I got back home and am about to go to the Apple Store, but saw this thread and couldnt’ resist posting. Abby, you’re day is so filled already- what will you do as an encore??? :stuck_out_tongue:

Cartooniverse

I forgot to mention the two houses where the pole tube was in a mud hole and the splash that went up as the flag went in went all over the kids face and hair and the house where theses black birds of some sort dive bombed him.

He’s back from swim practice now, had a shower and he’s in the weight/TV room doing Geometry. He’s taking it in summer school so he can have honors Algebra II and honors Chemistry his sophmore year.

I’ve started this months receivables and taken half a dozen calls for the yes, get this…
pest control business.

He’s leaving in 20 minutes for a 10 mile bike ride. He’ll be back in time to shower (again) have lunch and go to school.

He’ll work out in the weight room with his buddy at the field house an hour after class. (I imagine they pretty much just talk and show up to be seen by the coach.)

By the time he gets home, I’ll wrap things up here in the office and it’ll be dinner time. Then homework, followed by picking up the flags after seven, finally swimming again 8 to 10 p.m.

Whew, writing his day makes me tired!

Abby

What kinda apples are ya gettin’?

Wow, Abby, what a day. I really feel for y’all - those fire ant bits are awful.

I like the idea of the flag service as a fundraiser; my son’s troop in Houston (Alief) used to put out flags at the cemetaries on Memorial and Veteran’s day, but as a service project. I don’t think anyone had thought of people’s houses.

This weekend his troop (different troop, in New Hampshire) went camping - came back covered head to toe in mud. (It was cold and wet this weekend). No fire ants, though.

I hope the rest of your weekend was better.
