LDS General Conference

If you’re interested, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (“Mormon,” LDS) is having its semi-annual General Conference in which modern prophets speak to the world.

It can be heard “live” on the following website:

“Facts? Facts are useless. You can use facts to prove anything that’s even remotely true!”
Homer Simpson

There’s an LSD general conference?
Wooo Hooo!

Wait a sec

Sorry about the misunderstanding there…

I’m there, man. I’ll even buy the first round.

…send lawyers, guns, and money…

A friend of mine (who is a Mormon) is attending the dedication of a new LDS temple in Palmyra, NY this week. Is this ceremony tied in with the conference or is it just a coincidence?

Mostly coincidence, but not entirely. The church was officially established in Fayette, NY, (near Palmyra) on April 6, 1830. The temple dedication is intended to coincide with that anniversary. General Conference is held twice a year, once in April and once in October. The April date for conference is always near the 6th of April also, but it’s always on a weekend so it’s sometimes a few days off.

Other than the coincidence of dates there is no connection. Several temples are dedicated each year. The one in Palmyra is somewhat special because of the historical background.

From the Asleep at the Wheel CD, Bob Wills Rides Again:
“It must be hard to lose your wife.”
“Sometimes it’s damn near impossible!”

There’s this girl at work, just the prettiest, nicest girl there is, and I’m always tempted to tease her about being a Mormon, then I realize that my entire maternal side of the family is LDS… Ah, well… Another day dawns.

BTW, just so you don’t think I’m just being a jerk about her religion, she’s very bright and witty, so she’d know that I was just kidding, not being a dick or anything. And I’m sure she’d get me just as good.
