Led Zeppelin honored at Kennedy Center

Did anyone see this? What did you think?

I didn’t see it at the time, but caught parts of it on YouTube. Heart and Jason Bonham did a fantastic rendition of Stairway. Pagey really seemed to enjoy it. The Obamas seemed… slightly amused. Jack Black was a great presenter for them.

Page was more into it than the other two, who only gave a reaction to the performance when they noticed the stuff they chopped out of it. But that’s one more check off of songs of LZ4 that Heart has done – Now they’ve covered the first five, and perhaps Goin’ to California, as well. Their version of Misty Mountain Hop is better than LZs because oddly enough Plant’s voice is more delicate and subtle than Ann’s when she is covering them, and thus Plant’s voice works better much of the time, but MMH was meant to just go all-out with the singing and that’s exactly what Ann does. They should just get it over with and release an entire cover album of the whole thing. Also, Ann has kept her voice much better than Robert has: Led Zeppelin should reunite but she should take over the singing instead!

Hey, I’d buy that album. And yes, Ann was in fine form.

Also in general it didn’t seem that JPJ really cared one way or another for the whole thing. While Robert Plant seemed vaguely put off at being honored in such a way for his long-ago accomplishments, until the very end when he did get sort of teary-eyed.

Watched on TV (DVR to be exact).

Hearing Led Zeppelin music and wearing a tuxedo must have been difficult for true fans in the audience. Sort of like eating spare ribs with a knife and fork.

Or seeing a Cadillac with a “Dead Head” sticker on it.

Or getting filthy rich by writing a song making fun of the rich. (I’m looking at you, Roger Waters.)

Well, that’s certainly more ironic than a black fly in your chardonnay.

Or telling boring stories of glory days.

Saw the Wilson sisters take on STH on YouTube a few days back. Wish they would have done the entire song, but really enjoyed it. Ann can still rock out a song.

Who knows what they were thinking? It’s hard to filter through their acute embarrassment of having cameras stuck up their noses, trying to capture their reaction. When the gospel singers appeared, I thought that both Plant and JPJ appeared to be moved, but were trying to contain their emotions. As befits distinguished elderly men in tuxedos.

It’s very incongruous seeing people in formal wear watching a rock ballad. They need to either loosen up the dress code for rock stairs and comedians, or stiffen up the material presented. I mean, had they been wearing something less formal, perhaps they wouldn’t have sat there like bumps on logs aka their worst nightmare for an audience.

I wish the sound would have been more balanced. I’d imagine the gospel singers were much more powerful in person.

Twas’ The darkest days of Mordor.

…depths.
