Yes. You play one of four non infected. Your mission is to get from on end of the map to the other (a safehouse) intact. In your way are hordes of infected bloodthirsty zombies. The game is divided into campaigns, L4D2 has five, and one campaign is divided into five maps. In the last map there’s always an event where you have to defend against a big horde of infected while waiting for rescue. Besides regular zombies there’s an assortment of “special infected” that are playable in the 4 VS 4 mode called Versus.
The game is very easy to pick up and has a lot of ingame instructions. If you’ve ever played an FPS, then you should have no problem getting into the game. Valve games are very intuitive. I got the basics down in L4D1 almost immediately.
No. you can play the campaigns through in single player with the other survivors controlled by bots. Bear in mind the bots are pretty stupid. You’ll have more fun with other players.
Thanks all. I suppose I could have Wiki’d it (and did right after I posed the question)…
:o
Anyhoo, just got a Steam account, downloading the demo and I’m already past 50%! I’m loving the 2 Mbps download speed!
I have to say (and some of you may know this already about my detox thread in MPSIMS), since I have quit drinking my videogaming has come to a complete halt. Not sure why, but getting drunk and playing these games always went together, and once I quit drinking, the enticement to play evaporated for whatever reason.
Here’s to hoping a new game, lots of caffeine and killing zombie hordes reignites the gaming flame of passion!
go to the community tab in the steam app, search for SDMB. The SDMB group should be on the search results. Click on that and click on the “Join group” link.
Thanks. And I just blew through the demo as Coach. Man that sniper rifle is powerful. And holy shit The Witch was a badass. She about did me in because at the point I ran into her, all I had was a pistol.
I also really liked that biological bomb that makes them attack each other. Like shooting fish in a barrel!
I’m based in the UK. I’m always looking for friendly and competant players. I’m on there as LongNameForAShortLife if anyone is interested. I’d like to play through everything in campaign mode to learn the maps before giving versus a try.
Is the release date in the UK the 17th or the 20th?
I think a lot of people probably want to play a campaign as the survivors before they do versus… so I’m going to suggest we do the campaigns in whatever the default order is, from the top to the bottom. That way when we try to gather versus games together shortly after release, we can get a group together who have all played the first two campaigns and feel comfortable with playing them again on versus.
If you aren’t part of the SDMB steam group, I think you can join on this page. We should have games going every day for a few weeks, both versus and co-op.
Thanks, looks like it is out on the 17th over here, although Play.com is reporting the 20th. I’ve accepted your invite, hope to see you online sometime.
I don’t know what kind of parent I am, but my seven and four year old sons like watching me play this game…after they got over being scared shitless by the opening cutscene…
I was more worried about the profanity. I don’t want my four year old saying “kill all sonsofbitches” or anything…
Well, you’re the parent at all, but I’d be cautious about it. The sequel especially shows more detail killing zombies… severe limbs flying around, blood spurting (IIRC), etc. Lot of graphic violence.
12:01 AM Get L4D2
12:30 AM Get home, pretend to sleep
7:00 AM Leave for work
5:00 PM Finish work, get ready to teach my class
8:00 PM Get home, eat dinner
8:05 PM Start playing L4D2 with tygre
As an added bonus to those who stay up to get in some early L4D2 the Leonid Meteor shower will be in action. If your skies are clear you can go see it around 1a till dawn. A little L4D2 will help you stay awake.
LOUNE, what’s your gamertag these days? I saw a while back that you’d changed the “Tufar” one, but then the new one vanished, and now I have no idea what it is.
Xbox Live made me change it from “Dixon Tufar” to something else. So now, it’s “Phil Addio”. I’ve got a lot of folks that still know me as the previous, so I’m contemplating changing it back to some form of the former that’ll slide under Microsoft’s vulgarity filters.
Game launches in 15 minutes. I assume people will want to do coop campaign stuff first. We’ll probably get 2 of those going, maybe versus later. If I have room in my games anyone is invited.
